Job Summary:
We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position: Director - Housing and Residential Life

The Director of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is a full-time, 12-month, professional and reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Campus Life (AVP-CL). The Director will work collaboratively with campus colleagues in an effort to find opportunities to create transformative experiences for our students. This position is responsible for staff training, professional staff supervision, crisis management, leadership development, and delivering a comprehensive housing and residential program supporting student success. This position will maintain a focus and priority on building a staff with the skills and abilities to work with the diverse and first generation student populations that EWU serves.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree and 4 years of professional housing and residential life experience OR Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years of professional housing and residential life experience with 5 or more of those years serving in a mid-level role such as Assistant or Associate Director.
  • Experience developing staff training and professional development opportunities
  • Experience managing budgets and fiscal planning
  • Experience managing crises and emergencies
  • Effective problem solving skills, including experience analyzing and resolving conflict, successfully navigating group dynamics, and effectively building teams
  • Working knowledge of regulations affecting housing and residential life programs (i.e. Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, Title IX, etc.)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with campus colleagues
  • Knowledge of and experience with best practices for housing and residential life in the following areas: support of student learning and success; academic achievement; diversity and inclusion; social integration; wellness and well-being; life and career preparation; empowerment and accountability; and values clarification
  • High level of cultural humility and experience working effectively with marginalized populations
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Collegial work ethic that invites collaboration and shared vision
  • Demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with other student affairs departments or committees including developing partnerships for joint initiatives
  • Experience working with, and advising, student leadership
  • Six (6) years’ experience and progressive responsibilities in housing, residence life or related field
  • Experience working with Star Rez and Banner
  • Bilingual – Spanish
  • Experience with program development and assessment of residential curriculum
  • Experience with strategic planning

Responsibility / Duty: Supervision/Training/Management
  1. Recruit, select, train, assign, supervise and evaluate professional and paraprofessional staff.
  2. Lead, manage, supervise and direct administrative operations of Housing and Residential Life
  3. Responsible for designing and implementing the training for RLCs, Community Advisors, Apartment Community Managers, Office Workers in collaboration with other leadership team members within HRL, and Campus Partners.

Responsibility / Duty: Crisis Management
  1. Responsible for crisis management and critical incident response for Housing and Residential Life
  2. Monitor Maxient incident reports and facilitate student and staff outreach as necessary
  3. Participate in a secondary rotation (every 3-4 weeks) 24-hour on-call Emergency/Duty Coverage for after-hours emergencies and ensure appropriate follow-up and communication
  4. Follow up with RLCs, Dean of Students staff, and EWU Police, with appropriate interventions for students in crises or conduct cases as needed
  5. Create, train, and implement procedures for staff in collaboration with Dean of Students Office, EWU Police, and Title IX staff
  6. Respond to alleged incidents within the residential community. Assist staff in facilitating educational discussions within the communities impacted

Responsibility / Duty: Academic and Student Development
  1. Collaborate with Campus Partners, RLC’s and HRL Leadership on academic programming, multicultural programming, and residential learning outcomes
  2. Develop and implement activities to engage the residential and campus community in creating an environment that is welcoming and affirming to all identities
  3. Develop strategies and procedures to implement all aspects of the residential experience
  4. Responsible for supporting the leadership development within RHA, NRHH, and Hall government.

Responsibility / Duty: Administration and Assessment
  1. Develop annual programming and operations budget based upon department goals and objectives in conjunction with Associate Director for Business Operations and AVP-CL
  2. Manage budgets and follow department and University purchasing guidelines
  3. Develop and assess student learning outcomes for residential programming and staff trainings
  4. Develop and implement departmental emergency management plan in collaboration with Associate Director for Student Facilities and EWU Police
  5. Oversee the assessment of residence hall climate and satisfaction of students and staff.

  1. Facilitate positive campus partnerships to enhance the residential experience for students on campus
  2. Oversee the summer camps operations in collaboration with event planning, custodial, and facilities
  3. Serve on campus wide committees

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position requires attending meetings and events after hours and on weekends.


This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.
Salary Information: The salary range for this position is $80,000 up to $85,000. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
