General SummaryThe Academic Advisor in the Department of Technology makes course recommendations and gives academic advice to all assigned students, across six unique program areas, so that they may progress successfully through their academic careers at Illinois State University. The Advisor must provide accurate and realistic academic information and support to an assigned caseload. The Advisor must accurately interpret and relay academic policies and requirements, including general education (ISU's general education or the Illinois Articulation Initiative), as well as major/minor plans of study. The Academic Advisor is expected to have specialized knowledge about Technology majors in addition to a familiarity with university policies and procedures. The Academic Advisor reports directly to the Department Chairperson.
Additional InformationThe Academic Advisor must work without considerable supervision to effectively execute the goals and services of the Department of Technology. These goals and services are determined by the Department Chairperson in coordination with faculty. Regular meetings and regular contact with Chairperson are expected to execute the goals of the TEC department. The Academic Advisor's performance is reviewed formally on an annual basis by the TEC Chairperson, as required by Human Resources. Informal feedback is given through regular communications throughout the year.
The Department of Technology serves approximately 600 majors in six undergraduate degree programs and three graduate sequences of study, with approximately 20 faculty members, five staff members, and various numbers of graduate assistants and student employees.
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Professional advising experience or demonstrated equivalent in directly related field.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
4. Ability to multi-task and produce quality work under deadlines; organizational skills; detail-oriented; accurate record keeper; flexibility in a changing administrative model.
5. Ability to quickly develop an understanding of six unique majors.
6. Ability to work with diverse populations of students, peers, and public.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to make effective public presentations and communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
8. Working knowledge of basic office software (word processing, e-mail systems, spreadsheets, student information systems, databases, etc.)
9. Ability to work independently, but also work cooperatively with faculty and staff with a learner-centered and service-oriented philosophy.
10. Evidence of a positive professional demeanor that contributes to a positive and fulfilling work environment.
11. Evidence of understanding of the issues facing today's college students as it impacts their academic choices.
12. Valid driver's license
1. Master's degree, preferably in Technology, Education, College Student Personnel, or related field.
2. Experience with Student Information Systems, Technology, and ISU curricular policies and procedures.
3. Advising experience in a complex department with multiple disciplines, preferably in areas related to Technology.
Office setting. The core work hours of this position are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Position occasionally requires work beyond regular office hours.
