Description Position Overview:

The Department of Political Science at the University of Central Oklahoma invites applications for a non-tenure track, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in American Politics to **begin August 2022 and end in May 2023**. We seek a teacher who is dedicated to enhancing our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion while complementing existing faculty strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a full load (12 hours per semester, fall and spring) in American Government and other courses as assigned, as well as engage in service for the department as needed; Day, evening, and/or online classes are available. Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience.

Essential Job Functions:

The position requires teaching mostly sections of American National Government, an introductory and university core course, and other courses. Ability to teach our department’s other university core course, Introduction to World Politics, and/or courses supporting the college’s interdisciplinary minors is preferred. Experience teaching a diverse student body is valued.


In addition to teaching, applicants should be prepared to advise and mentor students, evaluate student performance, maintain department and student records in accordance with University policies; adhere to the educational philosophy of the University; work in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers; participate in University meetings that relate specifically to faculty; serve on Department, College, and University committees as requested; prepare departmental reports as requested; and, engage in teaching and service as defined by the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. Some departmental service may be expected.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

  • Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected.
  • An earned doctorate degree in Political Science, Public Administration, or other related fields awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution is required by time of appointment (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval).
**NOTE** If the doctorate is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to NTT-Instructor.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some teaching experience and/or work experience in the coursework areas to be taught.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Familiarity with use of online learning management systems (for example: D2L, Webex, etc.)
