Organizational Unit Overview:

The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.

Job Duties :

The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Nurse Specialist to provide direct patient care and case management for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Section. This position will serve as an extension of the physicians, but report to the Nurse Administrator of Clinical Operations. The position will interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners on a daily basis to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. The position will prioritize clinical situations, make in-patient rounds with providers, assist health care providers with clinic procedures (i.e., IV therapy, lumbar puncture, phlebotomy, IM and SQ injections, access Infusaports, Mediports, Hickman catheters, and chemotherapy administration), ensure orders are written and carried out in an expeditious manner, and facilitate communication between the specialty and ancillary departments and staff. The employee will possess and demonstrate leadership qualities and be self-directed with the ability to utilize critical thinking skills, communicate effectively, and perform many tasks simultaneously. In addition, the employee will make appropriate referrals as needed, maintain accurate patient records and follow agency research guidelines for documentation of patients on studies and protocols, and serve as an educator for the patient population and other family members regarding disease and disease management. The individual will have knowledge of Hematology/Oncology patients and chemotherapy administration. The employee will have the ability to work with a positive approach in a team environment and possess a high degree of sensitivity to the special needs of pediatric hemophilia, cancer, and sickle cell disease patients.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:

State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Prefer two years of pediatric nursing experience and some experience with oncology patients. Current CPR certification is desired.

License or Certification required by the Department:

State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License
