The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is currently seeking a passionate Physics educator who inspires students and is ready to be inspired by our Corps of Cadets.

The attractive riverside campus is home to a nationally and internationally representative student body of about 1,000 diverse Cadets.  The Academy provides the professional education and training required to prepare young women and men for careers as commissioned officers in the U. S. Coast Guard, one of our Nation’s five Armed Services.  The Academy offers B.S. degrees in nine academic majors:  Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Systems, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine/Environmental Sciences, Operations Research/Computer Analysis, Management, and Government.  The Academy is located near the shoreline of southeastern Connecticut, midway between New York City and Boston, and is within commuting range of regional, as well as national, colleges and universities in the CT/RI/MA tri-state area.  

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy invites applications for Lecturer of Physics. The desired start date is July 18, 2022.

The successful candidate will teach two or three Introductory Physics sections per semester, six hours a week per section. The classes incorporate active learning implemented through the use of an automated student response system, in-class student group work, and short “Interactive Learning Demos” and “Interactive Learning Labs”. The candidate will also perform other collateral duties as assigned. The teaching load will be 12-18 contact hours per semester during the school year. Over the summer, selectee will teach two sections of the Academy’s summer introductory mathematics course, institutional assessment, and/or section preparations.
 
Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree and/or Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field.
  • Experience using inquiry-based classroom methodology.
  • Demonstrated competence in creating and fostering a community of inclusion and diversity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills essential.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse student body highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience consistent with full commitment to the Coast Guard’s core values essential.
  • Exceptional candidates will have, in addition to the above, other credentials such as research experience in environmental physics (remote sensing, climate modeling, energy alternatives, etc.), a publication record in peer-reviewed science journals, full-time teaching experience of multiple courses, etc.

Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range ($97,629 to $111,268) for exceptional candidates. No relocation expenses are offered.
