Job Details

The Texas State University System Board of Regents, the Chancellor, and the Beaumont community invite nominations and applications for the position of President, Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT). The Chancellor and others are seeking a visionary leader who is focused on the future and committed to innovation and change, while continuing to prioritize student engagement and success, inclusive excellence, strong partnerships with K-12 and local employers, as well as enhanced collaboration with LIT’s sister institutions in Southeast Texas. The next president will continue to build and enhance innovative opportunities for LIT graduates through business acumen and will strengthen the institute’s significant contributions to economic development and quality of life in the region and beyond. The president is expected to assume office by late Summer, 2022.

LIT is a two-year technical college offering associate of applied science degrees and certificates in more than 50 educational programs, including business, allied health, technology, public safety, and continuing education. Ranked among the nation’s fastest growing two-year institutions, LIT enrolls 4,500 students in academic programs, including 1,600 dual credit and career and technical education students, in addition to serving thousands of additional adult learners through non-credit, workforce training courses, with an unduplicated headcount of 6,200 students.

Lamar Institute of Technology is located in Beaumont, Texas. The main campus, covering approximately 20 acres, contains 11 buildings and the Institute recently secured $37 million to construct a 51,000 square foot Workforce Training Center. Over the past several years, LIT has ranked as one of the top two-year institution producers of industrial technology graduates in the nation. It is one of the largest producers of process operators and instrumentation technicians in the world, with more than 500 students continuously enrolled in these programs. According to the US Department of Education, of all two-year public colleges, LIT was ranked number 1 in Texas and tied for number 3 in the nation for highest student median salary 10 years after graduation.

The next president of LIT will be presented with the exciting and challenging opportunity to lead the Institute to even greater heights. The next president will assume leadership at an extraordinary time - a point where the Institute has recently experienced significant growth and expansion during an unprecedented period of uncertainty due to pandemic and weather-related crises, yet where it will need visionary direction to continue to evolve as a national leader in technical education and a preferred provider of high-quality, workforce training for Southeast Texas and beyond.

Programs are enhanced by developing and maintaining partnerships with business, industry, and the community. Faculty are dedicated to teaching, advising, and scholarship. Both faculty and staff work to serve the Institute and the community.

History

Lamar Institute of Technology traces its roots back to March 8, 1923, when the South Park School District in Beaumont authorized its superintendent to proceed with plans to open a “junior college of the first class.” On Sept. 17, 1923, South Park Junior College opened with 125 students and a faculty of 14. Located on the third floor of the South Park High School building, the college shared the library and athletic facilities with the high school. In 1932, separate facilities were provided, and the name of the institution was changed to Lamar College, to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the “Father of Education” in Texas.

On June 8, 1942, as a result of a public campaign, a new campus was purchased, and classes were held for the first time on the present-day campus in Beaumont, After World War II, the college grew to 1,079, and a bill to make Lamar a state-supported senior college was introduced in the House of Representatives. The legislature approved the Lamar bill (House Bill 52) on June 4, 1949, creating Lamar State College of Technology effective Sept. 1, 1951. Lamar was the first junior college in Texas to become a four-year, state-supported college. Uniquely, Lamar retained much of its traditional community college mission, particularly in vocational programs, while continuing to grow with strong programs in engineering, sciences, business, and education.

In 1962, a graduate school was established, offering master’s degrees in several fields. The Doctorate in Engineering was established in 1971. In the same year, House Bill 590 became law, changing the institution’s status to university. Lamar State College of Technology, with an enrollment of 10,874, officially became Lamar University on Aug. 23, 1971.

Vocational subjects were among the first courses offered by Lamar and played an important role in the development of Lamar. A Division of Vocations was established in 1946 and became the Lamar School of Vocations in 1955. In 1970, the name was changed to the School of Technical Arts, and in 1972, it became the College of Technical Arts. During 1971, the college began awarding Associate of Applied Science degrees in certain two-year programs.

In 1969, an extension center was opened in Orange, and in 1975, the long-standing private two-year Port Arthur College became Lamar University at Port Arthur. The Lamar University System was established by the 68th Session of the Texas Legislature with the passage of SB 620, which took effect in August 1983. On September 1, 1995, the Lamar University System was abolished, and the components became members of The Texas State University System.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recommended in 1990 that all two-year programs at Lamar University-Beaumont be combined into Lamar University Institute of Technology. The programs in the former College of Technical Arts, Allied Health, Office Technology, and Restaurant/Institutional Food Management were placed in the new institute.

On September 1, 1995, the Institute of Technology was established as an educational center of Lamar University and a member of The Texas State University System. The Texas Legislature changed the name of the institution to Lamar Institute of Technology in 1999.
