Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director of Housing and Residence Life.

About the Role

The Director of Housing and Residence Life is responsible for fostering a living and learning environment within the university’s student campus housing that contributes to holistic, student development. This position promotes community development through residential programming and community standards consistent with the mission, operations, and policies of the university. The director is also the Student Conduct Coordinator. They support the student-led conduct system as its primary advisor and meet regularly with student board chairs to coordinate the conduct process.

This position reports to the Dean of Students and supervises one associate director and two assistant directors of housing and residence life. The director is part of the Student Success, Well-Being, and Belonging division and works closely with colleagues in that area, as well as with Facilities Management, Admission, and other offices to ensure students, including student residence life leaders, develop a strong sense of belonging and are actively engaged in campus life.

The Director of Housing and Residence Life is required to live on-campus and may be called upon at any time to assist in responding to student emergencies.

Position Qualifications

Candidates must have the following required qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s degree in student personnel administration or related field
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in residence life, including experience in residence staff supervision, leadership, and development
  • Commitment to implementing and developing programs and systems that promote holistic student development
  • Commitment to implementing educative programming which fosters student belonging and well-being
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse populations and a commitment to inclusivity and diversity
  • Experience with implementing student conduct
  • Experience with student information in institutional database systems
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Excellent skills in the following areas: communication, interpersonal, customer service, counseling, conflict resolution, decision-making, problem-solving, presentation, training, organizational, multitasking, detail, accuracy, and report writing
  • Proven abilities to meet deadlines, make sound judgments, manage confidential and sensitive matters, and work effectively with multiple constituencies
  • Ability to work in student residential buildings that are not handicap-accessible
  • Valid United States driver’s license with minimal violations
  • Access to a personal automobile 24/7
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as scheduled and needed
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies as needed

Preferred applicants will have experience in a single-sex, residential, liberal arts higher education institution.
