IT Installation & Maintenance Technician

Responsible for performing and/or assisting with installation, service provisioning and maintenance of information and communications technology (ICT) systems for The University of Kansas Lawrence and Edwards Campuses. Installations will require working aloft, confined spaces, on ladders, and cat walks. All installations, service provisioning and modifications must be in accordance with a master plan, yet allow technician the independence to deviate under certain conditions so that the system is operable. This position has a considerable amount of latitude in performing assignments. Work assignments are generally in the form of the objectives of a project to be completed or a problem to be resolved. The exact circumstances are frequently unknown at the time the assignments are made and the Network Service Technician must use their judgment in selecting the materials and method to be used to complete the work assignment. Choices are limited by Kansas University policies and procedures, industry standards and by safety considerations. This position shares in responsibility for information security by following all applicable security policies and procedures. Job Description40%-Installation and Modifications
The Network Service Technician will work moves, adds, and changes to the University voice, data, and video networks. Network Service Technician will use standard voice, data, and video installation practices, while adhering to university, national technical and safety standards to perform final testing and place into service various types of voice, data, and video equipment. This equipment will include jacks, horizontal wiring, cross-connects, voice equipment, station-related equipment, Ethernet switches, UPS systems, wireless access points, video-taps, splitters, and amplifiers. This can also require installation of wire mold and fire sleeve. In order to perform these moves, adds and changes, Network Service Technician must be skilled in the use of telecommunications hand tools, hardware and software. Network Service Technician must also read and interpret schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications sheets, cable plant drawings and floor plans in order to complete moves, adds, and changes. The Network Service Technician will report any unauthorized installations to the Installation and Maintenance Manager.

20% - Diagnosis and Repair
The Network Service Technician must make accurate diagnosis and analysis of trouble conditions which affect University voice, data, and video services. This includes isolating trouble sources, i.e., cross connects, station equipment (single line sets, FAX machines, proprietary sets). Video-monitors, taps, splitters, amplifiers and/or power and grounding conditions. Diagnosis and analysis may require the use of test equipment which will aid in trouble isolation. Once the trouble condition has been analyzed and isolated, the Network Service Technician will act to repair, which will alleviate the condition.
This action may include cable pair changes, cable replacement, component level change out, station equipment, jack, or video equipment replacement, and/or coordination with other vendors of Information Technology Services such as AT&T and other contractors. Once repair of the trouble condition has been completed, the Network Service Technician will document any necessary change in cable routing or pair assignments and keep the Installation and Maintenance Manager apprised of the status. All work must be documented in either work order form or a Remedy Case. Remedy case documentation will include all items as required by current Installation and Maintenance procedure.

10% -Training
Trains, instructs, and supervises student technicians, sub-contractors, and vendors. Assigns simple problems and non-complex equipment installation projects to subordinates and monitors their execution of these tasks. Provides training in diagnostic techniques and voice, data, and video installation/wiring procedures. When necessary, Network Service Technician will provide overview training with end users in basic equipment operational procedures and features usage i.e. phone set features.

10%-Inventory and Time Recording
Performs accurate accounting for all parts and materials used or replaced in the performance of repair or move, add, and change activity. Network Service Technician initiates the process of procuring replacements for inventory items used in the course of day-to-day activity. Network Service Technician is also accountable for tools and test equipment which has been issued to them. Network Service Technician maintains proper levels of parts and materials on their assigned vehicle.
Network Service Technician will prepare inventory and time tracking documentation as required by systems currently in place.

10%-Special Projects and Assignments
Network Service Technician will work with the Installation and Maintenance Manager on emergency or extraordinary situations which can adversely affect University voice, data, and video services. Network Service Technician will work standby shifts in rotation with other technician s and will work an equitable number of Athletic events and Change Requests.

10%-Planning, Organization, and Related duties
Network Service Technician will serve as liaison with the Installation Services Supervisor and the Installation and Maintenance Manager, coordinating priorities, scheduling, and organizing daily activities and jobs to optimize time usage. Network Service Technician also ensures their vehicle is kept in proper operational condition and that proper vehicle maintenance is maintained. Network Service Technician is to practice safe driving habits and possesses a valid driver's license. Network Service Technician will maintain all Infrastructure and physical plant spaces in a clean and organized condition.

Security Profile:
  • The Network Service Technician is responsible for complying with departmental policy relating to security. This includes key security, vehicle security, controlling access to secure areas and data security. In addition, Network Service Technicians:
  • Handles sensitive data - This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • Network - This position is authorized to configure, manage, and monitor network traffic in the performance of job duties.
Position Requirements
  • Ability to lift items unassisted that weigh up to 70 pounds, using step ladders to climb 6-24 feet.
  • Ability to use various hand tools, various drills, etc.
  • This work may require Network Service Technicians to work in less-than-ideal conditions including attic spaces, underground tunnels, and maintenance holes.
  • This position has an on-call component, which may require Network Service Technicians to respond to campus at odd hours or on weekends.
  • Be able to pass extensive background checks.
Required Qualifications
  1. Associate degree and two (2) years of experience in installation and service of ICT systems OR a high school diploma/GED equivalency and four (4) years of experience in installation and service of ICT systems.
  2. Experience in use of test equipment (Copper certifier, OLTS, OTDR, etc.), as evidenced in application materials
  3. Must possess valid Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. BICSI Installer 1, Installer 2, or Technician level certifications.
  2. Previous experience or training in installation and troubleshooting of Ethernet electronics in a local and wide area network and maintaining analog, digital or VoIP telephone systems.
  3. Previous experience in making various network connections from the outlet (jack) to the building interface with outside cabling.
  4. Optical fiber fusion splicer and hand tools experience.
  5. Knowledge of voice switching, special circuits and data switching.
  6. Previous experience in installing video cable and components and CATV systems.
  7. Knowledge or experience in working with fiber optic, outdoor broadband transmission technologies, local area networking, wireless or wide area networking.
  8. OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 hour training.
