The Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP) in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in the area of engineering leadership. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an expected start date of Jan. 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate will hold, or have held, an appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at a highly ranked university and have established an internationally recognized record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate must also have a proven record of excellence in leading public or private organizations, as well as a record of outstanding creative professional work and accomplishments. Applicants are expected to have a PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree, in engineering, business, organizational behaviour, education, or a related field at the time of appointment.

We seek candidates with outstanding expertise in engineering leadership who can complement the strengths of ISTEP, and the Troost Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering (Troost ILead), and lead a world class program of research and teaching in engineering leadership. Candidates must outline a compelling vision for the research program they would pursue. Areas of application for the candidate’s research may include but are not limited to: the nature of engineering leadership, characteristics of engineering leaders, engineering career paths, development of future leaders, ethics and equity considerations in engineering practice, teamwork and collaboration, or the socio-technical impacts of engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead and sustain innovative and independent research and maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program of the highest international level. Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario and academic leadership experience are desirable qualifications.

Established excellence in research should be evident through a compelling statement of research vision, strong endorsements by referees of high international standing, sustained publications in leading journals or significant conferences, impactful patents, and distinguished awards and accolades. Other evidence of sustained professional accomplishments and creative professional work, or noteworthy activities that have contributed to their international profile and prominence in their field will also be considered, such as an exceptional record of leadership, exemplary professional innovation and practice, or significant contributions to the development of professional engineering practice.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, a teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference. ISTEP is especially interested in individuals with a demonstrated commitment to innovative undergraduate teaching and engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate program levels.

The Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education & Practice (ISTEP) is U of T Engineering's newest extra-departmental unit and the first institute of its kind in Canada. Bringing together teaching and scholarship in education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and communication, ISTEP seeks to lead in research on transdisciplinary competencies and their integration into engineering education and practice. Founded in 2010, Troost ILead offers curricular and co-curricular, undergraduate and graduate programming and corporate training. Troost ILead has a dedicated, multidisciplinary research team that has produced internationally recognized work on the nature of engineering leadership, its application in industry, and its pedagogy.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
