Job Description: 

POSITION SUMMARY 
A Pool Interpreter works as needed to provide interpreting services for students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing to ensure appropriate accommodations in academic settings, meetings with faculty and staff, and campus events. May work evening and weekend hours in-person at the various Columbus State Campuses and Regional Learning Centers and/or virtually contingent upon student need and course modality.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Accommodation Delivery
Interprets for students, faculty,and staff who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing using American Sign Language and SignedEnglish. Interprets for non-signing hearing students and faculty using spokenEnglish. Prepares for classroom interpretation by reviewing textbooks, assignments,videos, and other related material. 

Provides an explanation of the roles of interpreters and consumers to inexperienced users. Provides functional guidance to practicum students as they prepare to graduate from the College's interpreting education program. Maintains confidentiality of student records and other confidential information.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Contingent upon need and availability manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federal and state, as well as internal regulations and procedures. Demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners.

Hours may include working outside of a normal workweek schedule as well as evening and weekend availability.

Knowledge of: The interpreting process; American Sign Language; English; needs and culture of individuals. who are deaf or hard of hearing; cultural diversity; the Americans with Disabilities Act; different types of disabilities; and adaptive services and technology.

Skill in: Interpreting sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign; verbal and written communications; operating general office equipment; following instructions; customer service; and problem-solving.

Ability to: Speak English fluently and articulately; demonstrate patience; understand and follow general instructions; read; understand text in a variety of subjects; demonstrate flexibility; work with a variety of people and disabilities; develop and maintain effective working relationships with students and other job contacts; and maintain confidential and sensitive information.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity. The employee regularly stands and walks for extended periods of time, and occasionally sits. The employee converses via sign language and/or verbally with others in person, virtually, and/or by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision and distance vision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
Must have a minimum of an Associate Degree in Interpreting/Transliterating and one (1) year of closely related experience. Proficiency in computer skills in order to interpret virtual classes and assignments. Ability to work towards the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Certification.

State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
