The School of Medicine’s Department of Immunology and Microbiology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Laboratory Science Professional.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.  At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity. At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals. Work at the senior level is performed fully independently.

Nature of Work

Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Intermediate Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

This Laboratory Science Professional will be supporting the work of Kyla Ost’s lab in the Department of Immunology & Microbiology. This is a full-time research position that will help establish a research program exploring interactions between adaptive immune responses and commensal Candida species (Candida albicans and Candida glabrata) in the gut microbiome. This position will utilize molecular, biochemical, genetic, immunological, and in vivo approaches. Occasionally, experimental protocols will require working in the evening or on weekends.  The employee will be working closely with the principal investigator in a small laboratory environment with growth potential. 

Examples of Duties Performed

All levels, with increasing independence at the intermediate and senior levels:

• Work will largely be experimental, but will require up to 25% clerical activities, including laboratory management.  
• Culture and genetic manipulation of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae
• Processing of animal tissues for downstream analyses
• Performance of in vitro in BSL2 conditions
• Participation and presentation in lab meetings
• Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
• Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
• Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
• Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
• Maintenance of laboratory stocks and buffers
• Ordering and procurement of laboratory supplies
• Maintenance of laboratory equipment and computers

Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary

Handling, inoculation, and necropsy of laboratory mice

Management of mouse breeding colony

Performance of animal experiments at BSL2 conditions

Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed

Shipping and receiving biological samples from collaborators and vendors

Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions

Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information

Acquisition and analysis of flow cytometry data

Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues

Assist on experiments for publication and constructing manuscripts. Contributions to successful projects will result in authorship on scientific manuscripts.

Review and implement lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs

Maintaining and updating lab protocols

Assist and train junior team members

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

Entry Level: $40,280-51,236

Intermediate Level: $43,834-55,757

Senior Level: $47,388-60,278

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Entry Level

• Bachelor’s degree in field relevant to research, including microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field
• A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Intermediate Level

• Bachelor’s degree in field relevant to research, including microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field
• A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

One (1) year professional level research experience in microbiology, immunology, and/or molecular biology

Senior Level

• Bachelor’s degree in field relevant to research, including microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field
• A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Two (2) years of professional level research experience in microbiology, immunology, and/or molecular biology

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in laboratory management, animal breeding and handling, working with Candida or Saccharomyces species, flow cytometry, molecular genetics.
• Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
• One to three years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
• Experience with Microsoft office suite of applications; FlowJo and Graphpad Prism and/or R preferred.
