The School of Medicine’s Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Web Application and Database Developer position.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Principal Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

Principal Professionals are either work leads over others or are considered a subject matter expert in a particular area.

Nature of Work

Principal Information Science Professionals utilize applied or computational mathematical analyses for a wide array of different applications and to solve complex problems. Experiments may include text interpretation, coding, ground theory methodology for the analysis of certain data, and quantum state analyses. Principal Information Science Professionals may also perform duties in labs that use primarily electronic equipment.

Principal Information Science Professionals either act as work/team leads for 2 or more FTE Professionals or are the subject matter experts (SME) in a particular area. SMEs possess a deep knowledge and oversight of a specific process, function and/or technology. SMEs are considered an authority in the area and are educated on the subject and are also able to share their knowledge with other stakeholders. Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.

This is 100% FTE as Principal Professional for the “Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young” (DAISY), “The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young” (TEDDY), “Autoimmunity Screening in Kids (ASK) program, TESS clinical trial and is a member of the Barbara Davis Center (BDC) Data Management and Information Technology Team.  These are large, NIH, JDRF and Helmsley Charitable Trust funded, epidemiologic and screening studies of the genetic and environmental determinants of type 1 diabetes.  This work involves follow large cohorts of children at increased risk, for type 1 diabetes. All studies involve extensive data collection, subject tracking, database development and management, data queries and data importing.  This functions as the primary lead, mentor and subject matter expert (SME) in several data management functions as described below.

Examples of Duties Performed

    Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and authority in the area(s) of: Authoring complex SQL queries and stored procedures.Full-stack web application development and maintenance for multiple studies using SQL, ASP framework, HTML, CSS and Javascript.
Oversee and provide informal leadership to the team members, including managing day-to-day priorities, evaluating and redistributing workloads on a temporary basis, training and mentoring staff Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders including investigators, statistical analysists and study managers in the area of bioinformatics and data analysis, and performing other tasks, as needed, related to analytic projects.
    Perform scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses including developing and maintaining major web applications for multiple studies using .NET ASP FrameworkCreate ad hoc reports to query existing research databases (Access, SQL). This includes but is not limited to providing datasets and summaries that help project managers to assess staff performance, implement new protocols, assess protocol adherence, and provide data needed for IRB continuing reviews.Automate and conduct data quality checks on an ongoing basis to ensure data is clean and complete.Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample dataDevelop and maintain research databases primarily utilizing Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access and REDCap.
Assist with the design and development of major programming projectsWrite custom scripts to access databases and analyze dataWrite custom web tools for PIs and other stakeholdersCollaborate with the Project Managers regarding oversight of data entry procedures and activities for research visits, sample storage and retrieval, questionnaire tracking, data quality checks and scheduling.Import and integrate research data from several sources into the local systems.Develop processes to import and integrate research data (e.g. from RedCap) into research databases.Provide user access and permissions for the SQL databases.Maintain data dictionaries for multiple studies.Learn and develop professional skills in order to incorporate new technologies and add new functionality to data systems.Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutionsAssist Supervisor and management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiativesAssist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or suppliesAssist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadershipProvide support for other data management tasks as needed.  This description is a summary only and is describing the general level of work being performed, it is not intended to be all-inclusive. Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $67,799 to $86,240.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related fieldA combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
Three (3) years data management and bioinformatic analyses experienceRequired: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

    Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science or related fieldFour (4) years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computingExpert knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical researchDemonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C++) and willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary
