Description of primary duties and responsibilities::

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) is to provide childcare that encompasses the needs of each child and family in a safe, educational environment. The structure of the ECLC’s focus is on the individual needs of each child, while providing quality, reliable, and safe childcare in preparation for higher education.The ECLC seeks to provide a program of experience designed to attain the following goals: to provide many opportunities for social development and adjustment; to promote development of good health habits; to provide opportunities for self- expression through language, music, art, role playing, dramatizations, and other play experiences.

Description of Work Continued::

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide quality care for all children. The Director will be fully responsible for planning and implementing a program that will enrich the physical, social, and emotional needs of the children. The Director will be responsible for maintaining an environment that is free of danger. The Director must have the ability to administer CPR and First Aid. Director must have basic computer knowledge and verbal/written communication skills, will supervise teachers, staff, and childcare workers; implement professional development for teachers and staff; establish and communicate employee policies; and effectively and positively communicate with families and children.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director for the ECLC is 50% administration and 50% instruction and reports to the Dean of the College of Education. The Director manages the ECLC including the following responsibilities to:

Confer with families, teachers, and staff to discuss educational activities and policies, and students’ behavioral or learning problems

Maintain, at all times, high quality childcare standards based on developmentally appropriate practices Prepare and maintain attendance, activity, planning, accounting, or personnel reports and records for officials and agencies, or direct preparation and maintenance activities

Prepare and submit grant proposals to solicit program funding

Recruit, hire, train, and orientate primary and teachers, staff, and substitutes and recommend personnel actions for programs and services

Participate in the planning and execution of fund-raising activities

Use computers to enter, access or retrieve data

Attend meetings that are required of NC Pre-K Directors and maintain monthly reports

Inspect fire protection equipment, playground surfaces and classroom furniture, and equipment to ensure proper maintenance and repairs are up to date

Attend pre-service and in-service trainings as required to include conferences, seminars, and teaching round tables to stay abreast of current educational trends and styles

Function in all capacities within the facility including the dining room, kitchen, multipurpose room, and play area

Collaborate with BK faculty to support teaching and non-teaching candidates supporting joint activities and service-learning opportunities

Schedule monthly meetings with teachers and staff maintaining the meeting minutes and evaluate program effectiveness

Provide accurate and meaningful annual performance evaluations for al childcare staff

Attend professional development seminars to maintain an understanding of the current best practices of curriculum administrative functions of child development programs

Attain and maintain membership in National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

Teach a course each semester for the Birth through Kindergarten program

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements::

Master’s degree in Education from an accredited University or College in a related field with a minimum of 5 (five) years experience in a managerial and supervisory capacity is required

Knowledge skills and abilities::

Reflect excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal/intrapersonal skills with teachers, staff, children and families

Have experience as a community leader with skills in networking, public relations, time management, persistence, facilitation, self-efficacy, and grant writing

Demonstrate knowledge of technology software and be able to multi-task and problem solve

Demonstrate knowledge about the required state licensing regulations and evaluations to remain compliant and in good standing

Possess and be knowledgeable of professional Early Childhood Professional Standards for North Carolina or the NAEYC Professional Standards

Preferred Qualifications::

3 (three) years of teaching experience in a licensed early childhood education center.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a member of the prestigious University of North Carolina System. Situated in southeastern North Carolina, FSU prides itself in being in one of the most diverse cities in the country and neighbor to one of the nation’s largest military installations – Fort Bragg.

FSU has a rich history that serves as genesis for its current status as a leading institution of higher learning. A year after the Civil War ended, the Phillips School provided primary education to Fayetteville’s black citizens, and the Sumner School provided intermediate education for this population. The two schools were consolidated in 1869 and dedicated in April of that year as the Howard School, in honor of the Freedman’s Bureau chief General O.O. Howard. Seven prominent African-American men pooled $136 to purchase two lots for the first building that housed the Howard School. Robert Harris was named the first principal of the Howard School.

In 1877, the Howard School became not just the first public normal school for African Americans in North Carolina but also the first state-sponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South. It was renamed the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville that year, Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, Fayetteville State College in 1963, and Fayetteville State University in 1969.

While FSU’s roots are as a teacher education institution, it now offers nearly 70 degrees at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. Many of the programs are accredited by the top agencies. The university’s School of Business and Economics is endorsed by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). AACSB is one of the most prestigious and rigorous accrediting bodies for business programs in higher education. Currently, less than one-third of U.S. business programs and only 15% of the world's business programs have earned AACSB accreditation. Receipt of this distinguished accreditation provides evidence that FSU’s School of Business and Economics has established itself as a leader among business schools. Additionally, the Master of Business Administration program has been cited by U.S. News and World Report and The Princeton Review as one of the best graduate business school programs in the country. The Department of Criminal Justice is accredited by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). FSU’s criminal justice program is the only such program in North Carolina to hold ACJS certification.

FSU is rapidly becoming a center for research and technology. In spring 2010, the university, in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, cut the ribbon on the Southeastern North Carolina Regional Microanalytical and Imaging Center. The center is home to the electron microprobe, an advanced imaging tool that magnifies objects up to 300,000 times.
