Research AssociateJob Summary:  This position will work with a team of scientists and provide technical support to Animal Science faculty in reproductive physiology. The Research Associate chooses and executes methods to accomplish the overall research goals of the reproductive physiology labs, reports data, prepares publication materials, supervises and trains student workers, serves as lab manager, and provides technical consultation and technical support to students, research staff, and faculty within the Department of Animal Science.



Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:

Thesis/Research based Master's or PhD degree in Animal Science, Molecular Biology, or a closely-related field to either and 3+ years of bovine reproductive physiology and/or molecular biology related research experience.

Required Qualifications:

Thesis/Research based Master's degree in Animal Science, Molecular Biology, or a closely-related field to either; or a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field to either and 3+ years of reproductive physiology and/or molecular biology related experience in a research laboratory. 

Job Functions:
Research and Analysis

    Conducts reproduction research experiments for faculty including but not limited to: DNA isolation; RNA isolation; RNA-sequencing library preparation; PCR (traditional, quantitative, droplet digital); cell culture; embryology (IVM, IVF, IVC, embryo cryopreservation); microscopy; immunohistochemistry; processing of blood samples; protein isolation; western blotting; protein expression systems; flow cytometry; RNA interference; CRISPR-Cas 9; ELISA; RIA  Manages research activities involving animals and helps with sample collections from cattle, sheep or swine.Analyzes results from research projectsPrepares reports of research data
Technical Assistance

    Provides technical support on lab experimentsProvides technical and safety training to students and other lab staffProvides technical support to applied bovine experiments
Lab Management

    Tracks use of lab supplies and orders as neededManages supply budgetsConsults with vendorsConducts basic lab safety checksMaintains safety training records for all active personnelMaintains all lab equipment including most maintenance and repair
Technical Writing

    Assists with manuscript preparation for publication such as statistical analysis, proofing, and writingWrites technical protocols and SOPs such as IACUCAssists the PI in writing sections of grant proposals
Supervision

    Supervises graduate students in the labSupervises part-time student workersSets schedules, assigns work and approves time sheets
Minimum Qualifications:

    Advanced knowledge of reproductive physiology-based research techniques and/or Animal Science agricultural research studies/farm operations Advanced knowledge of research methods including DNA/RNA isolation, RNA-sequencing, cell culture, embryology, microscopy, PCR, and/or immunohistochemistryGeneral knowledge of statistical software packages and willingness to gain advanced knowledge of softwareAbility to analyze data appropriately and prepare reports using technical writing skillsAbility to effectively communicate research methods with individuals or small groupsAbility to execute and oversee research projects; ability to work around large farm animals (primarily cattle) in farm settingAbility to allocate and coordinate resourcesAbility to oversee and direct the work of designated personnel and/or studentsAbility to multi-task and prioritize
