SUMMARY:

The Events and Projects Technician works as part of the Events, Conferences, & Support Services team, physically setting up furniture, staging, installations, and related elements for campus events, projects, and office moves. The Technician makes deliveries and performs assembly or breakdown of equipment and furnishings as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assembles and sets up furniture, staging, installations, and related elements for campus events, projects, office moves, and the president’s house, as directed.
  • Operates various technologies and software to access work orders and instructions, and to provide feedback.
  • Follows diagrams and written instructions.
  • Drives University vehicles; loads, delivers, and unloads furniture and equipment.
  • Maintains furniture, tools, equipment, and vehicles in good working order. Reports problems or hazards.
  • Safeguards master keys that provide access to all campus spaces.
  • Complies with all workplace safety guidelines; reports and/or rectifies safety hazards.
  • Complies with all University standards for the operation of vehicles.
  • Follows established standards for courtesy, professionalism, and customer service.
  • Completes assigned work in a timely, satisfactory
  • Repairs furniture, as needed.
  • Trains staff, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and independently.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Basic knowledge of event and banquet set-up; ability to learn and adapt to new concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to read and follow directions in English; ability to communicate with diplomacy and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong skills in problem solving, multi-tasking, public relations, and customer service
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize work assignments
  • General knowledge of the use small electric and hand tools, basic furniture repair, forklifts, and the operation of various sizes of trucks
  • General computer skills; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; and the ability to learn new computer software programs
  • Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license in good standing with Department of Motor Vehicles. Driving record must meet University standards.
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in customer services, carpentry, and/or operating a forklift is desirable.

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 8 hours a day; 40hours per week;
  • Work requires occasional nights and some weekends, including homecoming, commencement, and reunion weekends, and orientation.
  • This position is designated as essential personnel and is subject to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor.

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 3 (Hiring Range $15.88 to $18.68 per hour)
