Our system admin needs are vast, with 3 departments, many research centers and security now being at the forefront of our University. The School of Social Ecology (SE) at UC Irvine is seeking a highly motivated, self-starter to serve as a Windows System Administrator / Research Support Analyst under the direction of the SE Director of Computing. The incumbent will be responsible for the needs of all SE networks including those for staff, faculty, and labs. The incumbent will also serve as the primary point of contact with the UCI Office of Information Technology for the SE Secure Research Environment (SRE) and faculty research computing needs in general, will manage all licensing counts and distribution for computers managed within the School of Social Ecology, and provide high level (Tier 3) technical support when called upon with complex questions. The incumbent will possess advanced Windows administration knowledge, exhibit excellent customer service within a team environment, and exemplify excellence in the University core competencies - job mastery, goal accomplishment, enterprise contribution and innovation. The incumbent is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of automation trends in IT and support change management both in the SE Computing unit, as well as in the School as a whole. Required:
  • Three to five years with a Bachelor's degree or one to three years with MA/MS or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicable degrees with coursework in Computer Science, MIS or related field work and/or certificates comparable to degree/experience.
  • Three plus years working knowledge of Windows Active Directory, including functional levels, groups, schema, replication, DNS and Group Policy.
  • Five plus years of working with Windows Server, specifically 2012 R2 and/or higher.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Applicable degrees with coursework in Computer Science, MIS or related field work and/or certificates comparable to degree/experience.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate (verbal and written) technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines with minimal direction.
  • Skill in scheduling and completing work assignments on time in an environment of frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
  • Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Able to be flexible and adjust to changing technologies Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.
  • High attention to detail while juggling multiple projects and priorities both long and short term all at once.
  • Demonstrated skills in short- and long-term planning with minimal supervision.
  • Skill in setting priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Windows operating system, including system administration tools, registry, communications, devices, file system concepts and performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with Office 365 account administration.
  • Demonstrated skills to apply system administration standard practices, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of computer networking concepts, including cabling and network/subnet address assignments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
