Job Summary/Basic Function:

Temporary, part-time instructor responsible for teaching ENTC 208 (Entertainment Technology Practicum) and serving as University Theatre Technical Director. This includes supervising students’ practicum hours, setting learning objectives, evaluation of student learning outcomes and overseeing the scenic shop. ENTC 208 is coupled with the Technical Director position and is described as: “students’ experiential learning through production of entertainment and events, including live entertainment technicians and designers: Scenic/Carpentry, Costume/Wardrobe, Properties, Lighting/Electric, Sound/Audio, Video, and other entertainment technology areas. Open to all majors. 1, 2, and 3 credit sections offered regularly. Pre/Co-Req: THEA 120 – Stagecraft. Requires permission of instructor through application or interview.

Part-time faculty members shall maintain a prorated number of office hours each week, at a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes for each workload hour taught, at such days, times and locations as will accommodate the needs of the students.

This position requires in-person instruction on Millersville University’s campus.

Contingency: This position is contingent upon sufficient enrollments in assigned classes.

Responsibilities include:

Teaching:The assignment is delivering ENTC208 course that also incorporates the role of the Technical Director.

The Technical Director regularly collaborates with the Director of Dramatics and the University Theatre Production Manager to engage in pre-production, production, and post-production work including:

  • budgeting, scheduling, shop upkeep and coordination with other technical areas (lights, sound, video, etc).
  • generating ground plan and working drawings for construction of all scenic elements; preparing materials orders; attending production meetings (as schedule allows).
  • facilitating scenic build, installation, and strike of all scenic elements in Rafters Theatre; coordination with UT faculty, staff and student technicians in all departments to realize the scenic elements of the show; attendance at load-in; attendance at work calls and technical rehearsals as needed.

Scholarship:
  • In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship commensurate with the assignment.

Service:
  • Service contributions commensurate with the assignment, for example, serve on departmental and university-wide committees, participate in program-related projects and/or teaching related professional development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Relevant Master’s Degree in Theatre or related field.
  • Experience working in an academic theatrical environment.
  • Evidence of ability to successfully teach diverse student populations.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful teaching demonstration.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or ABD
  • Experience serving as a Technical Director
  • Prior college-level teaching experience.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:The Department of Communication and Theatre, in the College of School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, is comprised of 13 faculty members, 5 support staff, 235 students, and offers programs in fine arts, graphic design, and art education, with minors in art history and studio art. At the undergraduate level students can earn a BA, BFA, BDES and BSE. Graduate level students can earn an MEd in Art Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the instruction of courses.
  • Teach courses face-to-face and online if necessary at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, class discussion, using online tools and shop equipment and other appropriate tools via appropriate modes of education delivery.
  • Use computer for email, obtain information on web sites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, university and community.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risks.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
