About the Position:

This is a responsible, managerial and instructional position reporting to the Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs & Workforce Education. The position is responsible for activities related to administration and daily management of the Nursing Department.

Work requires the analysis of complex problems, planning of various interrelated activities, and the coordination of effort of multiple projects or functions. May work out programs and approaches to major problems and, in general, perform duties wherein recognized principles may be inadequate to determine courses of action.

Essential Functions/Duties:

  • Directs the establishment of policies and procedures governing selection and progression of students through the program.
  • Provides curriculum leadership and coordinates program evaluation and curriculum revision activities.
  • Monitors program adherence to the state regulations/national accreditation criteria
  • Provides leadership in developing and establishing department programs and policies.
  • Acts as spokesperson for department and/or college as required to area hospitals, agencies, other community activities, and state, regional and national organizations.
  • Assembles and compiles all materials required for accreditation or certification of the program.
  • Directs development & preparation of department’s budget and the department instructional materials.
  • Initiates, develops and writes grant proposals and implementation of projects.
  • Disseminates program information to appropriate college personnel and program students as well as appropriate recipients outside the college (accreditation or certifications agencies, state agencies, etc.).
  • Coordinates the nursing student selection.
  • Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of program students in order to improve the instructional framework.
  • Supervises adjunct instructors used in the program.
  • Coordinates practicums, clinicals, internships, joint ventures and/or work-related educational experiences for program students.
  • Coordinates relations with clinical/work related sites including negotiating for new sites as necessary.
  • Directs the development of the appropriate support laboratory on the campus.
  • Coordinates the acquisition of ancillary demonstration materials from appropriate vendors.
  • Ensures continuity of the program courses so that all required objectives will be satisfied.
  • Develops, with faculty participation, department goals and strategies to achieve goals to meet community needs.
  • Develops and administers appropriate staff development activities.
  • Develops staffing plans and schedules, and delegates work assignments.
  • Trains, evaluates, rewards and encourages, as well as discipline assigned employees.
  • Directs departmental activities so that projects are completed efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Oversees the budget and resource allocation of all areas assigned.
  • Consults and coordinates with Campus Deans of Academic Affairs on topics impacting the campuses, such as course schedules

This position is a level P18. To determine starting salary, Polk State College takes into consideration the pay level minimum, the candidate's qualifications and internal equity factors.

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of professional training and development program design as they apply to the Nursing programs.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional method theory and practical applications.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of contacts of considerable importance within, and outside of, the college where a lack of tact or judgment may result in losses to the college.
  • Ability to work independently on broad general activities with the responsibility for planning and delegation of work. Ability to make major decisions within broad limitations of policy and professional standards.
  • An unrestricted, active multi-state or Florida nursing license is required.

Required Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctoral degree in nursing or a related field is required. Master’s degree in nursing is required.

Required Experience

Five (5) years of experience in nursing practice and professional nursing education at the associate degree level is required.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in baccalaureate degree nursing programs is preferred.

Working Conditions:

Normal office working conditions. Attendance at onsite and offsite meetings, seminars and conferences may be required.
