Job Summary
In collaboration with Department Director, the Interpreter Supervisor assists with daily, short, and long term department operations to ensure quality and efficient provision of interpreting and translation services to UCSF staff and Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients.  Mentors and supervises medical interpreter professionals by monitoring the quality of performance and provision of service to LEP patients. Performs and serves as a role model for interpretation and translation practices. Responsible for assigned staff training, orientation, scheduling, and performance assessments.  Demonstrates initiative, leadership, and advanced problem-solving skills.  Utilizes knowledge of policies, procedures, and resources to ensure compliance with related regulatory and organizational requirements.  Maintains currency of professional qualifications and certifications.  Networks with internal and external colleagues for best practice learnings and continuous process improvement strategies.  Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively communicate with all levels of staff and a broad and diverse patient population.

Under the leadership of the Director of Interpreting and Language Services, the Interpreter Supervisor assists with oversight of language access service providers for medical interpreting and translating for UCSF staff and for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families. Provides supervision and mentoring to medical interpreters.  Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Safeguards ethical treatment, including sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, and patient rights.  Provides interpretations and translation services as needed.

This position will work remotely as well as onsite as necessary based upon operational needs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, management, interpreting, communications, liberal arts, and sciences, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Certification from a medical interpreter school or program such as the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)
  • Five or more years of previous experience as a Medical Interpreter in an academic or clinical environment
  • Solid subject matter knowledge of medical interpretation and translation services to train and guide employees on techniques. Applies cultural knowledge and sensitivity to improve the patient experience
  • Knowledge of medical center, HR, and UC policies and processes. Solid knowledge of relevant interpreter federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to identify compliance risks and regulatory issues
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment
  • Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and lead assigned staff in an efficient and effective manner
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate, and integrate with physicians, nurses, and other health professionals throughout the organization. Maintains cooperative working relationships with professional and administrative staff, patients, peers, multidisciplinary team members, management, and outside agencies
  • Solid skills in quickly evaluating complex issues and identifying resolutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through a critical thinking process
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain clinical concepts in multiple languages, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel
  • Ability to perform commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Solid knowledge of the organization's medical interpreter application programs to troubleshoot issues and recommend improvements in convenience and efficiency

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a program/project lead or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff to improve medical interpreter services

  • Certification from a medical interpreter school or program such as Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)

The Interpreting and Language Services department at UCSF Health is committed to the provision of interpreting services 24/7 to patients, families, providers, and staff to facilitate optimal care and services.  We provide services at no cost to patients who are non-English speaking, limited English proficient, deaf, hard of hearing, sight or speech impaired. We offer on-site, over the phone, and video medical interpreting in over 200 languages, including American Sign Language.  Interpreting services are provided by our own UCSF staff interpreters as well as qualified vendor and contract staff who collaborate with our staff to optimize communication.  We also offer document translation services and bilingual certification for clinicians and staff. Using Lean principles and innovative improvement strategies, we partner with all levels of staff to continually evaluate multi-source data and trends to provide the most comprehensive, compliant, efficient, user-friendly, and excellent program for our patients and staff.
