Job Summary:  This position will work with a team of scientists within the Genomics Center for the Advancement of Agriculture to perform a wide variety of computational genomics research related to plant and animal agriculture. The selected applicant will provide bioinformatics support to UTIA faculty, staff, and students. This person will serve as a consultant to faculty and students wishing to implement genomic methods into their research programs. The individual will be responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining bioinformatics databases and pipelines that will be utilized Institute-wide for routine genomics applications. They will assist faculty and graduate students throughout the Institute with experimental design, and follow up with bioinformatics support on a variety of projects spanning many species and data types. This person will also serve as an intermediary between cooperating faculty and the university’s High Performance & Scientific Computing group. In addition to bioinformatics know-how, the ideal candidate will also have the ability to work in a team and effectively communicate with a wide variety of collaborators. They should also be willing to summarize data, assist with interpretation, and develop materials for publications.

Job Functions:
Genomic Data Management and Pipeline Development

    Develop and organize “-omic” databasesGenerate standard operating procedures for routinely processing agricultural genomic dataPerform routine genomic analyses (e.g. genotype calling, differential gene expression, epigenetic peak calling, etc.) Develop flexible computational genomic pipelines
Consulting and Research Support

    Assist with code and software development & troubleshootingInterface with UT High Performance & Scientific Computing group and Office of Information TechnologyAnalyze and summarize collected dataPrepare research reportsAssist with manuscript preparationProvide technical support faculty and graduate studentsDesign and execute experiments in collaboration with UTIA faculty
Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Science in animal science, bioinformatics, computer science, genomics, or other natural or life science and 3 years relevant research experience in the area of  genomics, or bioinformatics;

A PhD in animal science, bioinformatics, computer science, genomics, or other natural or life science with research experience in the area of genomics, or bioinformatics

Minimum Qualifications:

    Advanced knowledge of bioinformatics and computational genomics approachesExperience with reproducible computational workflow development (e.g. Snakemake, Nextflow)Experience with data science (e.g. R, Python, Julia) and machine learning programming  (e.g. Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch)Experience with data cleaning and wranglingExperience with database programming (i.e. SQL) and managementExperience in a high-performance and/or cloud computing environmentTechnical writing skillsAbility to effectively communicate research methods with individuals or small groupsAbility to execute and oversee research projectsAbility to allocate and coordinate resourcesAbility to oversee and direct the work of designated personnel and/or studentsAbility to multi-task and prioritize

Salary range: Market Range 09 with benefits. Salary will be based on level of experience.
