Position Summary:

Individual colleges within the Community College system provide child development centers, offering child care, child development, nutrition and related services for the pre-school children of students, staff and citizens of communities in their respective service areas.  The colleges also offer academic programs in early childhood education.  The child development centers provide the collateral function of serving as laboratories for practical experience by early childhood education students.

The Director of Child Development Center manages the operation of a pre-school child development and care center as well as the academic practicum of early childhood education students at a Community College.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education or an appropriately related field with two (2) or more years of experience in a related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Experience in Early childhood education, including classroom or laboratory instruction.
  • Experience in child care administration or business management.
  • Experience in supervision of human resources.
  • Experience developing and managing operating budgets and plans.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards.
  • Experience with NAEYC Accreditation and State of CT Early Childhood Education licensing.
  • Experience working in a community college in early childhood education.
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Dean or other administrator, the Director of Child Development Center is accountable for the operation and administration of the College’s Child Development Center and for assisting the College’s Early Childhood Development students in carrying out their academic practica through effective performance in these essential functional areas:

  •  Program planning and development
    • accountable for developing effective programs of child care and child development as well as programs to provide practical teaching experience for the College’s early childhood education students.
  •  Center operation and administration
    • accountable for the operation of the College’s Child Development Center. 
  •  Student teacher instruction
    • accountable for providing a useful laboratory for early childhood development students and for providing practical instruction and coaching. 
  •  Parent communications
    • accountable for providing useful consultation and reporting to parents of enrolled children.
  •  Program quality assurance
    • accountable for assuring the continuing quality of child care and development in the College’s Center.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings.  These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Starting Salary:

$61,077 approximate annual* plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits. Salary Range for this level is $61,077-$110,885. (*New hires to State employment start at minimum of salary range).
