The faculty instructor will educate medical assistant students to become multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing both administrative and clinical duties. Additionally, faculty teach medical assistant students that they directly influence the public’s health and well-being, and requires mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.

As a member of a learning team, faculty report to a designated dean and participate in program, division, interdivision and college-wide team activities. Faculty provide instruction, expertise and leadership within their program and content area. Faculty are expected to remain current in their area of expertise and in the field of education through professional growth and continuous learning activities.

Faculty contribute to the College community as exemplified by committee involvement, participation in leadership activities, academic advisement of students, and sponsorship of student activities. Faculty members are also encouraged to be involved in the NTC District through various service opportunities in community organizations or through other community activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary purpose is to educate medical assistant students to become multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing both administrative and clinical duties. Additionally, faculty teach medical assistant students that they directly influences the public’s health and well-being, and requires mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.
Responsibilities
Faculty must utilize instructional plans, direct and assess student progress in achieving theory and performance requirements of the program.
NTC Faculty will serve their learners and the College in the following ways:

  • Facilitate learning through classroom activities, distance learning experiences, workforce development, out-of-classroom activities and the mentoring of students and peers
  • Responsible for all aspects of the medical assistant program to include administration, organization, and overall supervision of the program
  • Continuous quality review and improvement of the program
  • Academic oversight, including curriculum planning and development, and outcomes
  • For all didactic, laboratory, and clinical instruction to which a student is assigned, there must be a qualified individual(s) clearly designated by the program to provide instruction, supervision, and timely assessments of the student’s progress in meeting program requirements.
  • Implement a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learning in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains
  • Implement evidence-based assessment and evaluation strategies that are appropriate to the learner and to learning objectives
  • Create exams to align with current best practice in the medical assistant profession
  • Create course learning content with WTCS Medical Assistant state aligned curriculum
  • Create and maintain community and clinical partnerships that support program educational goals
  • Abide by legal requirements, ethical guidelines, agency policies and guiding frameworks of all health care agencies where learning occurs
  • Maintain compliance with annual review form submission and data gathering for program
  • Create and maintain community and clinical partnerships that support program educational goals
  • Collaborate with new clinical sites to seek approval of MAERB requirements for clinical
  • Promote safety in all aspects of clinical, PPE, and patient care
  • Participation in any state aligned curriculum revision group
  • Support and maintain collaborative relationships with business & industry, community based organizations and K-12 partners
  • Assess and evaluate student performance in alignment with the College assessment plan
  • Conduct assigned classes for the scheduled length of time and submit final grades
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and achievement for up to one semester after the semester end unless requested for a longer period of time
  • Coordinate instructional support services to meet individual student accommodation and modification needs
  • Assist in student academic advising
  • Utilize and engage in professional day activities and team time as designated
  • Maintain course outcome summaries, learning plans, Performance Assessment Tasks (PATs), syllabi, and online Canvas template in the approved District format and time parameter
  • Actively select and use appropriate learning materials and resources including textbooks, library resources, equipment and supplies to enhance learning
  • Assist in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating a new or modified course/certificate/program
  • Collaborate with the program team in identifying, developing, implementing and evaluating strategic goals and objectives (Wildly Important Goals)
  • Participate in the budgeting and procurement process
  • Keep professionally up-to-date in area of content expertise and in the teaching profession
  • Participate in institutional, advisory and program team and committee meetings
  • Review curriculum to align with NTC and WTCS programs philosophy and mission, current health care trends, and community and societal needs to prepare graduates for practice in a complex, dynamic, multicultural clinical environment
  • Integrate sound educational principles, theory, and research in medical assistant program curriculum
  • Modify curriculum based on assessment of program outcomes, learner needs, current evidence-based medical assistant practice, and societal and health care trends
  • Evaluate student learning activities in the classroom using competency-based evaluation standards
  • Review assessment and evaluation data to modify and enhance the teaching and learning process
  • Provide timely, constructive, and thoughtful feedback to learners to develop professional communication and collaborative interdisciplinary practice
  • Actively support diverse learners
  • Attend the College’s in-service sessions, and commencements and other activities as directed
  • Maintain professional certifications, licensures, and requirements
  • Assist in student recruitment and Student Services activities
  • Attend College Open Houses on-campus and off-campus, set-up and take down) to assist with student recruitment
  • Assist with dual credit and other articulation/transfer agreements
  • Assist with coordination of grant development and management as directed
  • Maintain documentation as required by accreditation, program, or clinical sites
Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree required, with the commitment of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree upon hire if candidate does not already possess one.
  • At least 4,000 hours of direct occupational experience in the medical assistant field within the last five years
  • May waive the occupational experience of one year within the last five years if the candidate has two years post-secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within the last five years.
  • Possess a medical assisting credential with good standing by an accredited organization by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or under International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • Experience in teaching and working with diverse populations preferred.

    1 to 3 hours: Balancing, bending, driving, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, twisting and working in temperature extremes

    Additional Physical Requirements:
    Vision: Adequate with aid to read instructions, labels, documents, computer screens, and differentiate between colors.
    Hearing: Adequate with aid to understand oral requests, telephone conversation, and PA systems.

    Required Employee Program Safety Training:
    Bloodborne Pathogen, emergency action plan, emergency eye wash, emergency procedures, ergonomics (office/workplace), hazardous waste, medical waste and slips, trips & falls.
