Description/Goals


Knox College invites applications for the position of Assistant Softball Coach. This is a part-time, 12-month, exempt, non-benefits eligible position reporting to the Head Softball Coach. The start date is flexible. The successful candidate will have a focus on supporting student-athlete success and developing a competitive NCAA Division III program.

Knox College, a member of the Midwest Conference and NCAA Division III, is a vibrant community of scholar-teachers and students with a tradition of free inquiry, independent thought, and diverse perspectives. Softball at Knox officially began in the spring of 1977, but have made the MWC tournament just twice in the 46 year history of the program. However, there has been a reinvigoration of the softball program, especially with recent improvement to the Knox Softball field including a new LED scoreboard, bullpens, and improvements to both the infield and outfield surfaces. Defeating two conference foes for the first time in over 20 years in 2021, the Prairie Fire Softball are primed to compete for a Midwest Conference Championship. Recruiting both locally and nationally, the roster dones 50 percent of its student-athletes from Illinois and the other 50 percent from across the country.

Thanks to record-setting fundraising over the past five years, the following upgrades to Prairie Fire facilities have been made possible:

  • Creation of the 1,500+ square-foot state-of-the-art Schmid Golf Performance Center which boasts a putting green, high-tech aboutGolf course simulator, custom lockers, and a 70-inch video screen
  • LED video scoreboard, goals, a gated brick archway, and an upgraded Jorge Prats Field with high-quality synthetic turf at the Whitcomb Soccer Complex
  • LED scoreboards at Blodgett Field (baseball) and the Softball Complex
  • Improvements to the infield and outfield of the softball field and the installation of bullpens with backstops
  • Branded strength and conditioning equipment in the E & L Andrew Fitness Center
  • Prairie Fire branded jumps pits and throws implements for the track and field program
  • Top of the line electrostatic painting and refurbishment of all locker facilities branded in Knox purple
  • New modern flooring installed in the athletic training room and offices


In addition, the past three years have seen the athletics department:

  • Facilitate increased branding of all Prairie Fire facilities
  • Increase its social media presence across all channels
  • Complete a website redesign to capitalize on the department’s increased online audience
  • Development of student-centered Forever Fire Career Development and diversity, equity, and inclusion programming


Coming off of another strong year of fundraising, the department is in the process of installing new state-of-the-art video and audiovisual technology in the department's multi-purpose room and film room.


Responsibilities


The Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for assisting and supporting the head coach in all aspects of the program including but not limited to: assisting with the execution of a successful recruiting and retention plan; assisting with the integration of the program into the campus community; scheduling, planning, and supervising practices and contests as assigned; assisting with the administration of all aspects of the program ensuring compliance with departmental, institutional, Midwest Conference (MWC) and NCAA rules and regulations; assisting with alumni and booster engagement including promotion of program on social media platforms; scouting of opponents; additional administrative duties as assigned; attend all required department meetings, complete all administrative assignments, and attend all required functions as designated by the Head Coach, Athletics Department and/or the Director of Athletics; Must pass the NCAA rules compliance test and comply with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.


In addition, this position will have duties assigned in game-day operations for a fall or winter sport.


Education and Experience


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
  • Experience as a softball or baseball student-athlete or student-coach/manager
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and projects
  • An appreciation for a residential liberal arts education, respect for individual differences, openness to the values and opinions of others, and flexibility to adapt to constant change
  • Respect for individual differences, openness to the values and opinions of others, and commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for underrepresented communities


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience as a softball or baseball coach at the high school, club, or collegiate level
  • Prior experience with recruiting at an NJCAA, NAIA, or NCAA institution
  • Experience with Front Rush database or similar platform
  • Experience with youth and skills camps/clinic
  • Experience with HUDL video editing system or a similar systepm
  • Experience with photoshop and/or score shots
  • Experience in game-day preparation or operations
  • Experience with administration of team travel
