Butler University is nationally recognized by the Princeton Review for providing dynamic student involvement opportunities both on campus and throughout the city of Indianapolis. This Assistant Director will contribute to these efforts by facilitating robust DEI programming, training, and support programs for students, groups and campus partners. They will advance the BU|BeWell model with the creation, implementation and assessment of diversity, equity and inclusion focused on the student experience and development across the eight dimensions of wellbeing.

Overall, the Assistant Director will actively contribute to the vibrant campus environment and collaborate with students, colleagues, and community partners to enhance the holistic development of the Butler University student body. This is a full-time, live-on position.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the University's strategic goal of creating an intentionally diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning and working environment.
  • Advance BU|BeWell by coordinating Diversity Center programs and services that contribute to student belonging and success.
  • Create co-curricular experiences for students that promote greater cultural awareness and understanding, social justice, and culturally-relevant leadership development.
  • Serve as a resource and advocate for student organizations housed within the Diversity Center. Provide training and ongoing support for student organization leaders. Work closely with faculty advisors and campus partners to ensure successful operations of the student organizations.
  • Provide DEI-related training for students, including multicultural mentors, student organizations, SGA, and residence life student staff.
  • Contribute to a highly engaged Butler student experience by living-on campus and supporting student life efforts. Expectations include participating in a shared Campus Activities on-call rotation (please note, this is not part of Residence Life on-call duty); Collaborating with colleagues to support programs and initiatives that engage students in meaningful ways; being present for co-curricular programs; and supporting student trips, retreats and other departmental-sponsored initiatives
  • Collaboratively manage website, social media and other external facing resources
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    The successful candidate should be a collaborative, innovative leader with a fierce commitment to supporting underrepresented and marginalized students. A master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field is required.

    The successful candidate will possess the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships
  • Experience working directly with students from marginalized/ underrepresented backgrounds and identities
  • Understanding of college student development
  • Experience advising college students
  • Desire to have a high level of engagement with students
  • Creative, innovative, collaborative, glass half full, can-do attitude!
