The laboratory of Dr. Florian Douam is looking for a research assistant to perform innovative animal research in the field of virology. The Douam Lab is located at the National Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratories (NEIDL), and focuses on defining molecular mechanisms that govern the pathogenicity of, and immunity to, several clinically relevant viruses from yellow fever virus to SARS-CoV-2. To do so, we are using cutting-edge mouse models as well as innovative cell culture-based approaches. The laboratory is currently composed of four graduate students, one laboratory manager, one research assistant, three undergraduate students, and several visiting scientists. The animal research assistant will manage our animal research program and will be supporting the critical animal research of the laboratory at biocontainment level 1, 2 and 3. Important tasks includes: viral inoculation, necropsies, mouse colony maintenance, anesthetic and surgical procedures, genotyping and (cross-) breeding. In addition, the animal research assistant will provide training and support fellow lab members with their animal research, as well as ensure that all fellow lab members comply with ethical research procedures.
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist who has a strong interest in studying viral pathogenesis and immunity in small animal models. At minimum, a Bachelor's degree is required with 3-5 years of laboratory experience. The candidate is expected to have strong organizational and communication skills, and be a good team player. Candidates need to be comfortable with working with small animals in conventional laboratory settings, and in biocontainment laboratories. Candidates with previous experience in mouse handling, colony maintenance, surgical and anesthetic procedures, various types of injections/tissue extraction, are strongly encouraged to apply. Previous experience in working in biocontainment laboratory level 3 is not required, but the candidate will be expected to go through specific training to work at such biocontainment level. A preference will be given to candidates with the intent to commit to this position for at least 2 years. Salary is commensurate with experience.
