Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Patient Billing Unit manager, the Billing Supervisor performs advanced level work related to clinical denial management. The individual is responsible for overseeing the Dental Center medical and dental denials by conducting a comprehensive review of clinical documentation and handle audit-related/compliance responsibilities and other administrative duties as required. The Billing supervisor is responsible for the day to day operations of the Patient Billing Unit, monitors team performance, meets billing performance goals,  and analyzes and develops workflows. This role is key to securing reimbursement and minimizing organizational write offs.

The position identifies and works to resolve charge problems to ensure accurate and complete billing, and educates staff on proper billing, follow-up and documentation practices. The position reviews third party payer reimbursement denials based on the following: documentation, billing accuracy, medical necessity, coding, modifier and related issues. Additionally, this position will actively ensure that PBU manages, maintains and communicates denial / appeal activity to appropriate stakeholders and reports suspected or emerging trends related to payer denials to Revenue Cycle management.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum five years of directly relevant experience
  • Three years of experience in a healthcare revenue cycle or clinic operations role with progressive leadership responsibilities
  • Experience in managing and appealing denials
  • Experience with dental or medical and insurance terminology, CDT, CPT, ICD coding structures, and billing forms
  • Demonstrated supervisory, organizational, and customer service skills to effectively supervise and prioritize the activities of subordinate staff, and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with billing and / or collections operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical and insurance terminology, and of billing and / or collections internal procedures and external regulations
  • Strong skills in quality customer service. Interpersonal skills to manage conflict and collaborate effectively with all constituent groups, including patients, physician offices, third-party payers, attorneys, outside agencies, and clinical and administrative personnel across departments.
  • Solid leadership skills to coach and improve staff performance. Ability to provide thorough and accurate review of complex subordinate work and to oversee coordination of ongoing tasks and projects over extended periods of time.
  • Skilled in written and verbal communications, with the ability to serve as a resource, to convey complex clinical finance and business information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports and analyses.
  • Computer proficiency in all relevant hardware, software, and specialty information systems used throughout the department. Ability to synthesize data and utilize computerized systems to produce meaningful reports on department operations.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze and evaluate complex and difficult problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply solutions.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and third-party reimbursement methodologies

Preferred Qualifications
  • Solid knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to evaluate and document human resources matters and performance
  • Epic or Axium experience
