Department Summary

The mission of Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising (ASUA) is to support holistic academic services through various departmental programs and resources that promote equity, retention, timely graduation, and student-defined success for all undergraduate students.

ASUA supports developing, improving, and maintaining undergraduate programs and related policies. It provides leadership and input, as appropriate, for changing, enhancing, or improving existing programs and policies. Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising also provides leadership in developing academic support programs.

ASUA is also responsible for ensuring that the laws, regulations, and campus policies that apply to undergraduate education are implemented relatively and are consistent with their intent.

Job Summary

The Professional Advisor/Academic Success and Professional Advising will be an advisor to CSUSB Undergraduate students in helping them navigate their student experience. The position will coordinate the Undeclared program for Advising and Academic Services.

Responsibilities include, but is not limited to:

Academic Advising

  • Independent curricular advising of undergraduate, international and prospective students.
  • Class schedule preparation, develop education and career goals, PAWS review/interpretation, and establishing education plans (MyCAPS).
  • Researches and identifies solutions to complex problems as they arise which may include collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and administration.
  • Provides advising in person (one-one-one and group), virtually, email, and/or telephone; domestic and international.
  • Exercises judgement, based on knowledge, interpretation, and demonstrated understanding of university policies, and procedures in various situations.
  • Employs counseling techniques as they relate to career, academic engagement, cognitive and psychosocial development, campus life and student engagement.
  • Collaborate, strategize, plan, and implement advising programming, workshops, and events with faculty and staff.
  • Assist students in articulating and achieving graduation and educational goals.
  • Coordinates content and facilitates training and development of peer advisors.
  • Attends UAAC, Navigate and/or other advising related platform events, advising council meetings, and committees.
  • Participates/Coordinates group and individual advising with centers and departments across campus and offsite.

Coordination

  • Oversees the coordination of an advising program, as determined by the needs of the department.
  • Liaison between academic advising and college departments. Responsible for expertise in college specific programs.
  • If applicable, hires and leads advising center peer advisors and student assistants, if applicable.
  • If applicable, provides guidance, lead and direction to peer advisors and monitor work responsibilities and duties.
  • Coordination and facilitation of college level peer advising training with participation and partnership in with the university paraprofessional training events.

Events, University Service, & Cross Campus Collaboration

  • Participates in university events such as orientation, preview day, graduation, convocation, academic advising and services, workshops, department events, and others as they arise.
  • Partner with campus constituents such as the student mentoring programs, office of first-year experience, and academic/student success related programming.

Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the college programs to which assigned.
  • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain program rules and regulations.
  • Take initiative and exercise resourcefulness in advising practice.
  • Ability to translate student development, leadership theory, and research into practice.
  • Experience fostering and maintaining effective relationships and ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines and coordinate the efforts of multiple areas is essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and in large groups.
  • Public speaking and ability to reason logically analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Remains current regarding trends and developments in higher education, student development theory, high-impact practices related to advising, transition and student success. Will remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, the development of professional contacts with colleagues, attendance at professional development courses/conferences, and trainings, as directed, by the Director.
  • Works both independently and collaboratively to plan events, conduct presentations, host workshops, participate in orientation and more.
  • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
  • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
  • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of university academic requirements, including general education, major requirements and other requirements.
  • Working knowledge of university policies and procedures.

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,691 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month
