Job Location: Oglethorpe University - Atlanta, GA

Position Type: Full-Time Faculty

Education Level: Graduate Degree

Job Category: Education

OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music to start in Fall 2022 (please note that this is a non-tenure track, limited term appointment). This new hire will be responsible for directing the University's Choral Program (which includes the University Singers and University Chorale), teaching existing courses in the Music program (music technology and/or music composition as a preferred secondary field) and contributing to the University's Core curriculum.

Responsibilities will include full-time teaching (3/3 course load), engaging in regular service to the university, and maintaining an active professional practice. The service component of the position will include contributing to the development of new Music major, participating in student advising, and engaging in student recruitment activities.

Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff, promotes a culture of respect for diverse experiences and perspectives, and understands and addresses the role of inequality in shaping our individual and collective identities. We value faculty mentorship and support faculty teaching, research, and development through the Office of the Provost which works closely with the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The university currently enrolls a diverse population of nearly 1,500 students who represent more than 30 states and 30 countries. More than half of Oglethorpes students identify as persons of color and 40 percent are the first in their families to attend college. Candidates from historically excluded groups, whose work furthers the institutions diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and who bring varied life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

Qualified applicants should possess a DMA or PhD at the time of appointment, relevant teaching experience, or equivalent professional experience. Preferredcandidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching from a liberal arts perspective, stressing excellent writing skills, theoretical understanding, critical analysis, and connecting theory to practice. Furthermore, we are seeking candidates who will take advantage of the learning opportunities our Atlanta location has to offer by encouraging students to attend concerts/performances in the community (for instance, this may include organizing trips to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and/or other local ensembles).

To assure full consideration, please submit a letter of interest (which should speak to a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion), curriculum vita, evidence of teaching effectiveness, an audio/video sample of professional skills, and contact information for three references. Inquiries may be made to Dr. Brent Runnels, Director of Music, at brunnels@oglethorpe.edu. Application screening will begin on May 9, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.

Organization

Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe University is Atlanta’s only co-educational small private college, home to more than 1350 eclectic and engaged students from 33 states and 31 countries.

Renowned for the groundbreaking Oglethorpe Core, Oglethorpe's academically rigorous programs emphasize intellectual curiosity, individual attention, close collaboration among faculty and students, and active learning in relevant field experiences. Students connect theory and practice with the help of Oglethorpe’s A_LAB (Atlanta Laboratory for Learning), an incubator for experiential learning through internships, study abroad, civic engagement, and undergraduate research.

Oglethorpe’s study abroad venture with LeadAbroad has expanded its global footprint, with the development of five global campuses in Barcelona, Cape Town, Greece, Paris, and Rome.

Oglethorpe is home to the Conant Performing Arts Center, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and the Piedmont School of Atlanta. The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels compete in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association.
