Job Summary

The primary purpose of the Department Coordinator position is to provide full-scope administrative support/assistance to the department chair and faculty members, and to provide direction to students who interact with the Statistics Department.

The Department Coordinator provides guidance and review to ensure the department’s adherence to department, college, and university guidelines for all administrative procedures. The department chair serves an elected three-year term, requiring that the Department Coordinator provide continuity in processes to a variety of policies and procedures. The Department Coordinator is often the only person in the department with experience and knowledge of precedence and procedure and must be able to work independently under general supervision. This position is the primary administrative support position in the office and therefore performs the full scope of administrative support assistance to the department.

Department Summary

The Statistics Department is an academic department within the College of Science and Mathematics. The department includes 20 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 6 lecturers with essentially full-time teaching loads, and 4-6 part-time lecturers. The department provides an extensive curriculum that offers a Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) degree in Statistics and also a Statistics Minor, an Actuarial Preparation Minor, and a Cross Disciplinary Studies Minor in Data Science. A Master’s program has been proposed and is currently under review. If approved, it would likely enroll its first cohort in Fall 2023. The Statistics program currently has about 200 undergraduate majors and approximately 80 students minoring in Statistics, 11 in Actuarial Preparation, and 31 in Data Science. The Department also offers a large number of introductory service courses for students across the university. The total number of student credit units (SCUs) taught by the department averages about 10,000 per quarter.

Key Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to draft and compose correspondence and standard reports in a clear and understandable manner, utilizing a thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling and proofreading.
  • Ability to compile and assemble clear and concise reports using judgement and discretion in selecting and analyzing information for inclusion.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, email, calendaring, databases, online systems, web research and file sharing.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population, various personalities, and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to independently handle multiple tasks and priorities and successfully meet deadlines for day-to-day and long-term activities in a busy environment with frequent interruptions.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent. Type 45 wpm. Four years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience).

Salary and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $39,312 - $48,000 annually

Classification Range: $39,312 - $61,776 annually
