Organizational Unit Overview:

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine consisting of approximately 50 people.
This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students, dental students, and graduate students. The department also provides guidance and research experience to graduate students seeking advanced degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty (16)-directed research programs of which many are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession by activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional
organizations, as consultants, and through other activities.

Job Duties :

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a Research Scholar. The responsibilities of this position as in all our departments laboratories are similar in education, competency and experience requirements. Main change in duties is instead of having basic knowledge and skills this person is required to respond, modify research processes, work independently in collecting data and analyzing the data for recording research and writing papers for publications. This researcher will train and supervise others. Following is specific examples.

Although technical in nature this researcher is required to work independent of the PI in carrying out research goals in the lab. The researcher will train other lab personnel, master students, student workers & graduate students in the method of molecular biology, the design of experiments, in vitro and in vivo tick-mouse models of Lyme disease. The researcher may prepare manuscripts on their scientific experiments and be reviewed by PI. Although working with more independence the researcher will continue to meet and interact with PI to set goals & review progress.

Specifically, this position will be involved in research on Borrelia burgdorferi and Leptospira genetics, biochemical pathways, and virulence mechanisms of the spirochetes.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Master’s degree plus some hands-on experience in genetics/molecular biology/bacterial genetics and handling of animals for in vivo experimentation.
