The Cardiac Surgical Technician, under the guidance of the Registered Nurse (RN), is responsible for the care and safety of the patients who come under his or her care. Assists with age-specific cardiac surgical procedures and practices principles of surgical asepsis. Identifies breaks in the sterile field and ensures that appropriate action is taken. Anticipates needs of the surgical team and promotes efficient flow of the operative procedure. Ensures effective communication between the charge nurse, the patient, staff, physicians, and other hospital departments. Consistently demonstrates behaviors that model the LLUMC Murrieta Mission and Vision.

Performs other duties as needed.

High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) or Certified Surgical Technician program or equivalent experience and skill to meet competency requirements of the position. Minimum two years Cardiothoracic scrub experience in an acute care facility required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required. Certification as surgical technician required within 6 months of hire. Operating Room Technician (ORT) certification preferred.

Demonstrates knowledge of autoclaves and sterilization modes. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, physiology and Pathophysiology. Demonstrates knowledge of the use of equipment, instruments and supplies. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology. Ability to work cooperatively with the surgical team. Demonstrates competency in the practice of advanced level case assignment and advanced level equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
