Position Summary: This incumbent will provide support to the Head Hockey Coach in maintaining a highly competitive and successful Division 1 Men’s hockey program in a manner compatible with the department and University philosophy. The Assistant Coach will also act in compliance with NCAA, applicable Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations. The assistant will assist the Head Hockey Coach in organizing, conducting and supervising all aspects of the men’s hockey team within the parameters designated by the University.

General Purpose: The Assistant Coach will assist the HEAD Coach in the successful operation of the program and in the execution of practices and skill development. The Assistant Coach will implement and execute a successful recruitment strategy, while preparing athletes with instruction of an academic and personal nature. This incumbent will also serve as a coordinator for position-specific players & assist in the development of all position players.

Remote Workdays- This is a full time on Campus position with zero remote workdays.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist Head Coach in all aspects of developing and maintaining a competitive intercollegiate sport program
  • Instruct and teach student athletes in fundamentals of hockey, while providing a strong and affirmative leadership for all student/athletes
  • Recruit, evaluate and cultivate quality student-athletes to CU whose athletic skills make them highly competitive and whose academic abilities make them a good candidate for our student population. The Head Coach will assign area of concentration
  • Commit to adhering to all rules and regulations of the Athletic Department, University, conference affiliations and the NCAA
  • Performs administrative responsibilities that will assigned annually by Head Coach that will include but not limited to: planning and executing team travel and prepares all phone logs and contact, CARA logs and all proper paperwork for admissions process
  • Participates in the planning, organizing and execution of all practices and games
  • Oversees the mental and physical preparation of athletes for competition. This includes individual skill instruction for specific players and evaluating the athletes’ performance and progress to ensure peak performance during practice and contest
  • Scouts and evaluates opponents’ performance and recommends game strategy based on that evaluation
  • Supports Head Coach in achieving fund raising, budget and community service goals
  • Assist with hockey school operations and the marketing of hockey camps. Head Coach will assign specific duties
  • Supports the CU Athletics mission of excellence in the classroom, community and competition while furthering the strategic plan for Clarkson University. This includes monitoring academic and performance of our players to aid them in achieving full potential
  • Available to work evenings, weekends and overnight travel as needed (up to 20 times per year by bus, car or plane)
  • Responsible for breakdown of video analyses and coordinates video exchange
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Division 1 Head Hockey Coach

Education:

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-3 years combined progressive experience at the NCAA collegiate and/or international level
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the University

Experience:

Minimal Experience:

  • 1-3 years combined experience at the NCAA level or junior leagues
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes
  • Familiarity of athletic recruitment methods and techniques
  • Experience in recruiting student athletes
  • Ability to identify athletic skill levels of potential student athletes

Preferred Experience:

  • Playing experience at the college or professional level
  • Working knowledge of NCAA Division 1 rules and regulations
  • Coaching experience at the Division 1 level
