UW MEDICAL CENTER - MONTLAKE KIDNEY/DIALYSIS has an outstanding opportunity for a PART-TIME DIALYSIS/PHERESIS TECHNICIAN (50%, Night, Weekend Shifts). The Dialysis/Pheresis Technician prepares, assembles, operates, and monitors equipment used for dialysis and pheresis treatments; prepares dialysis solutions and concentrates; and participates in quality control on dialysis equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide front-line Dialysis and Pheresis services:
• Assemble, prepare, prime, and preset dialysis and pheresis equipment and materials in the dialysis lab and at patient bedside according to nephrology orders
• Maintain current knowledge of operation procedures and maintenance of new equipment
• Coordinate with Nursing Staff to determine prioritization and timeliness of procedures
• Reprocess and disinfect hemodialysis equipment per policy and procedure
• Aseptically dispense dialysis solution to include calculating, measuring pre-weight of dry chemicals, and verifying through chemical analysis for accuracy
• Make changes in dialysis composition by compounding any additions such as potassium, calcium, urea, and magnesium
• Prepare and mix bicarbonate solution for patient use
• In coordination with RN, perform bedside plasmapheresis treatment; observe patient’s tolerance to plasmapheresis and report changes to physician and/or RN; make equipment adjustments to avoid adverse patient effect; adjust apparatus parameters based on patient data and conditions, control speeds for blood products collection and safe return of patient blood; administer coagulant or other additives
• Participate in on-call coverage rotation for urgent dialysis set-ups outside laboratory business hours
• Perform related duties as required

Staff Development:
• Participate in orientation of Dialysis Pheresis Technician Trainees and other medical staff

Fiscal Responsibility:
• Demonstrate fiscal responsibility by assuring cost-effective delivery of quality patient care
• Maintain inventory of supplies

Quality and Safety:
• Participate in Quality Control and maintenance of dialysis equipment to meet manufacture, departmental, and regulatory standards. Record all maintenance, operational functions, cleaning, and cultures
• Provide for a safe environment by wearing personal protective equipment while disinfecting equipment or when pouring any chemical solutions
• Maintain a clean and orderly working environment
• Respond accordingly to all emergency and routine troubleshooting calls from nursing personnel
• Recognize and respond to acute and emergency situations (cardiac/respiratory arrest, power failure, bomb threat, fire, disaster)
REQUIREMENTS:An Associate's Degree with emphasis in chemistry, biology, or medical sciences AND two years of experience in a medical laboratory to include one year in a dialysis/pheresis laboratory at the level of Dialysis/Pheresis Technician Trainee OR equivalent education/experience.
