Job Purpose:

Serve Gonzaga University and the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion as an innovative, collaborative, and dynamic leader committed to promoting and advancing the Gonzaga University Mission Statement. Supports the Chief Diversity Officer on matters of strategic importance, and shares information with the Chief Diversity Officer on key DEI projects and initiatives taking place across the University.

Under the direction of the Chief Diversity Officer, the Associate Chief Diversity Officer co-leads the university’s commitment to provide culturally diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environments for the university’s workforce, student body, learning spaces, programs, services and partnerships. The Associate Chief Diversity Officer is responsible for implementing the university’s vision, strategic goals and objectives that integrate the educational value of a diverse and inclusive learning environment through collaborative engagement with faculty, staff and students.

The primary areas of accountability include assessment, advocacy and education through research, programming, and student and workforce development. The Associate Chief Diversity Officer serves as a leading advisor and subject matter expert to university management, staff, faculty and students in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and equity. The incumbent manages key diversity related staff departments to provide services and programming to students, faculty and staff.

Function Details:

  • Provide strategic and administrative leadership on matters related to the functional areas of responsibility to meet the needs of the University and academic endeavors.
  • Support the development, implementation, assessment, and evolution of the University’s Strategic Diversity Plan, working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and other divisions to aligned strategic goals and plans.
  • Provides leadership for functional operations with focus on creation, implementation and evaluation of plans, policies, and procedures, and their alignment with university-wide policies and strategies.
  • Represents ODEI on University committees, and at university functions, as requested by the CDO.
  • Promote continuous assessment and benchmarking of operational and planning efforts.
  • Ensure adequate and timely communication regarding ODEI planning and processes.
  • Represent Gonzaga University on community boards and organizations at the request of the CDO.

  • Collaborates with the CDO to provide vision, leadership, coordination, and strategic planning for diversity and inclusive excellence throughout the University.
  • Provides administrative management of diversity & equity vision & strategic plan implementation.
  • Pursues the integration of diversity initiatives in all strategic programming, collaborating with partners to ensure all inclusion and equity work is aligned with University policies.
  • Oversees and supports employee-led resource and affinity groups
  • Supports student resources, programs, and affinity groups
  • Encourages high morale and the delivery of quality, customer-focused information and services by employing a leadership style that motivates employees to accomplish established goals and objectives in a collegial, self-motivating manner

Function Details:

  • Coordinates with CDO to provide leadership and coordination for institutional educational and assessment initiatives including inclusive excellence, equity scorecard, and campus climate studies and evaluates diversity goals by developing metrics/scorecards and tracking progress.
  • Ensures the development and delivery of key diversity training programs and opportunities and provides training and development to educate faculty, staff, and students on how to recognize, accommodate, and appreciate individual difference.
  • Implements university-wide opportunities to promote cultural understanding, competency, and a climate of equity and inclusion. Training may include online tools, in-person workshops, ad-hoc presentations, and other programming. Training and related programming may initiate out of the areas directly supervised by the CDO and can be in collaboration with University partners such as Center for Teaching & Advising, Human Resources, academic programs, etc.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.

Other Functions:

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion within a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the elements and dynamics of organizational change.
  • Demonstrated success in developing educational programming with and for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, identify and implement best practices of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and initiatives
  • Must have strong understanding of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1991 Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other applicable laws.
  • Experience interacting with and incorporating the voices of students and student groups, particularly students of color, and other marginalized student groups, including students with disabilities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading or participating in significant organizational change.
  • Experience with equity and inclusion planning in higher education.
  • Three (3) years teaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Experience with intercultural issues, International Education, Study Abroad.
  • Demonstrated ability to cross organizational and cultural boundaries with ease, adapting language and style to context.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of training, organizational development, conflict resolution methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues of social justice, diversity, and inclusive excellence as fundamental aspects of academic excellence is preferred.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with individual and groups across campus and in the community,
  • Strong written and communications skills.

  • Ability to be mobile around campus and travel as required for University business.
  • Wrist and hand movement related to computer work
