Under the direction of the Plastic Surgery Division Chief, the Nurse Practitioner will function as a provider of patient care on specific surgical in- and out-patient services. Incumbent will function as a surgical assistant in the operating room and in the clinics in coordination with established surgical services. Direct supervision will occur by assigned attending surgeons. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from pre- to post-op settings. This position requires skills and knowledge in the fields of cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery and wound care. The successful candidate will show interest in learning and staying current on aesthetic trends and associated tools in the industry such as, wrinkle relaxation and dermal filler treatments, laser treatments and microneedeling treatment, Coolsculpting, and the practice of customized consultations and skin care treatments. The position will work at multiple locations including Hillcrest and La Jolla.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the NPI or NPII level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of clinical work experience in Plastics or Dermatology as an RN or NP. Experience must include surgery experience.

  • Ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment e.g., tissue perfusion measuring devices.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine including basics in pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular wound care, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Procedural experience in Plastic Surgery or related Surgical Specialty.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice. May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
  • Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.
