Job Overview

Georgetown University's Office of Residential Living is seeking a Director of Residential Education.

Georgetown University housing is a strategic priority given Georgetown University's campus plan goal to house 90% of all undergraduates on campus, the downtown campus initiative opening a 485 undergraduate and graduate apartment complex, and the university's priorities regarding student formation, well-being, equity and inclusion, and belonging. This position has a substantial impact on the living and learning environment and the connections between the academic mission and the co-curricular experience. All undergraduate students are required to live on campus for three years; therefore, the residential environment has a unique opportunity to assist students in becoming their full authentic selves through a variety of initiatives including Living and Learning Communities, Faculty-in-Residence, Engaged Learning integration & Mission/Jesuit Values integration. The person in this position is a key leader in the Safety Net through training professional and student staff in addition to responding and working with students of concern and their families.

Key responsibilities of the Director of Residential Education include:

 

 

  • Directing overall operations for a large and complex residential education environment encompassing live-in and live-on residential staff for over 5,000 academic year housing undergraduates and 475 graduate students year-round downtown and with annual budget oversight of over two-million dollars.
  • Working with and responds to key stakeholders in organizing and managing expectations at a top ranked university in an urban and resource-constrained environment.
  • Developing relationships with key campus partners, works collaboratively with the Executive Director for Business Development & Residential Operations for the overall strategic management of the Office of Residential Living, and utilizes technology and assessment to support the mission.
  • Making presentations regarding housing to parents, prospective students and University departments.
  • Designing and implementing an inclusive residential environment conducive to learning and engagement.
  • Playing a key role in responding to student and campus-wide emergencies and coordinating response as a member of the Director-level emergency response rotation.

 


Work Interaction

Overall leadership, vision, and management of a multi-functional and complex department involving students and staff, policies and strategic decisions. The Residential Education unit oversees a multitude of functions including selection, training, and supervision of Resident Assistants & professional working in 17 residence halls, apartment, and townhouse communities, program development, diversity and inclusion initiatives, Living and Learning Communities, Faculty in Residence, Residential Judicial Council and InterHall (both student-run organizations), adjudication of residential conduct matters, student of concern management and neighbor relations. Position also oversees Residential Education staff at the downtown apartment complex.

This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. This Director effectively manages and plans a large and complex department encompassing 2 Associate Directors, 3 Assistant Directors, 11 full-time Masters-level Community Directors, 102 Resident Assistants, and Residential Education downtown staff.

This position collaborates in developing policies affecting undergraduate student life and summer programs. This position serves as a key leader in the renovation and development of spaces impacting the residential student experience. Additionally, this position actively participates on various Student Affairs and campus-wide committees; serves as a vital liaison with various campus offices, including Student Affairs, University Counsel, Case Management, Academic Deans' Office, Academic Resource Center, Residential Ministers, Planning and Facilities Management, GU Police, Office of Global Education, Residential Ministry, and Auxiliary Business Services; regularly communicates with a variety of constituents (i.e. parents, students, partner offices); engages personnel within the department to accomplish goals and objectives; and manages crises in the residence halls and works closely with other University personnel.

Requirements and Qualifications

Requirements for the position include a Master's Degree (in higher education or related field) with a minimum of 7-10 years or progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience in higher education, especially student and community development, living and learning environments, counseling, and crisis response; demonstrated knowledge of organizational, managerial, budgetary, and financial management skills; experience in leading and supervising a diverse group of professional and student employees; excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills; and understanding of legal and risk management.

Preferred qualifications include experience a Jesuit, Catholic educational setting with particular attention to the role that mission plays in developing students, such as demonstrated care for the whole person and supporting diversity in community; and skills related to data and assessment; ability to work collaboratively with a broad group of stakeholders; and knowledge of higher education, and student affairs is important. Experience working with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds including BIPOC students, LGBTQ students, first generation students, students with disabilities and other underrepresented groups.

Must be able to work the month of August (training and residence area opening), understand and commit to the expectations inherent in an on-call staff member, and willing to work occasional evening and weekend hours, closing and opening of semesters.
