Senior Instructional Designer

Job Description:

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Senior Instructional Designer. The Senior Instructional Designer will promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by applying knowledge of learning theory and instructional design to specifically assist faculty and departments in the design and development of engaging, rigorous, and academically sound courses. This position will consult one-on-one with faculty, as well as design and facilitate faculty development workshops and other types of faculty learning experiences using multiple formats and delivery methods. This position uses data and research to incorporate evidence-based practices in all aspects of the work, allowing research to guide course design and data to measure the effectiveness of learning interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
  • Designs and facilitates faculty professional development in various formats focused on teaching, learning, and instructional design.
  • Mentors faculty through the design, development, and facilitation of courses.
  • Collaborates closely with deans, program administrators and instructors to design and develop quality curriculums, content, modules, courses, and programs.
  • Consults with individual instructors regarding their course curricula and pedagogical methods.
  • Collaborates with academic program coordinators to address specific teaching and learning ideas and concerns in their face-to-face and online program offerings.
  • Ensures alignment of learning outcomes with content, activities, and assessment in courses.
  • Establishes consistent quality standards in terms of look and feel, template designs, and coherent user experiences across programs and courses.
  • Applies project management, communication, and problem-solving skills in the design of all courses to meet tight deadlines.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Adult Education, or related subject area. Doctorate degree is preferred.
  • Experience teaching college-aged students in higher education strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in higher education designing and developing curricula for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate faculty learning and development through online, face-to-face, and self-paced learning experiences.
  • Strong emotional intelligence with skills in self-awareness, active listening, empathy, self-regulation, compassion, and other social skills important when supporting faculty with their teaching and course development.
  • Demonstrated application of learning, motivation, and instructional theories/practices in the design of learning solutions.
  • Experience assessing course quality using an established rubric (e.g. QualityMatters, OLC, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in developing engaging and interactive content and courses in Canvas or other LMS. Solid graphic design abilities for the purpose of effective learning.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, communicating well with constituents at all levels, working well with teams and independently.
  • Excellent project management and time-management skills enabling management of multiple projects completed by project deadlines.
  • Experience and knowledge in creating effective and visually appealing learning objects through programs such as Photoshop, Panopto, Articulate, Captivate, Audacity, Camtasia, etc.
  • Ability to manage and resolve expectations and conflicts.
