Job Details

The University of Lynchburg invites applications for a full-time financial aid counselor. The financial aid counselor provides financial aid information and advising to prospective/current students and their families in a fast-paced team environment while complying with federal and state regulations as well as University policies.

 

The Financial Aid Counselor reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director of Financial Aid.  The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Director of Financial Aid. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

 

Job Type: Full-Time, Benefits Eligible

 

Specific Job Duties:

 

  • Counsel students and their families through the financial aid process via phone, email, video/in person meetings and presentations.

     

    Complete work in adherence with University, state, and federal guidelines and communicate such policies effectively to students/families.

     

    Manage Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant application, distribution, and validation.

     

    Complete federal Verification for selected students and assist with Professional Judgment (PJ).

     

    Monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).

     

    Perform additional related duties that may be required.

     

    Attend financial aid training to remain current with federal/state/University policies.

  • 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (7.5 hours/day with some evening and weekends  to meet needs of department may be required

     

Experience/Skills:

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions

     

    Must have good teamwork skills

     

Physical Demands:

 

 

  • Work is primarily in an office environment.

     

Required Qualifications:

 

  • 1-3 years of financial aid experience.

     

    Excellent listening, verbal, written communication skills and public speaking experience.

     

    Experience with financial aid systems, preferably PowerFAIDS, NSLDS, COD and ScholarNet.

     

    Outstanding customer service skills.

     

    Experience analyzing information and researching a variety of sources to identify and resolve problems or issues.

     

    Excellent organization skills, problem solving skills and follow up skills.

     

    Knowledge of federal aid regulations and programs.

     

    Ability to establish and maintain positive, friendly, and professional working relationships.

  • Bachelor’s degree
