Provides reports, serving as technical subject matter experts, and assisting with the development of policies, procedures, and guidance documents to committees. This position works closely with the their assigned schools and departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

The research safety specialists perform the following:

  • Laboratory construction and renovation design consults
  • Risk assessment review and design of safe research experiments
  • Implementation of safety policies and procedures
  • Comprehensive laboratory verification inspections
  • Review of activities involving the use of hazardous materials including but not limited to infectious biological substances, recombinant DNA, hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, controlled substances
  • Emergency action plans
  • Health & safety training
  • Provide guidance and training on transport and shipping of biological materials and chemicals
  • Review use of hazardous materials in research and experimental animal procedures
  • Coordinate visits and inspections by outside regulatory agencies.

Required Skills
  • B.A./B.S. and at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in laboratory safety or EHS compliance may serve as a substitute for education.
  • Certification designation in a health and safety or related discipline preferred (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Environmental Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc…).
  • Must have or obtain the 24 or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training.

This position requires the ability to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team as well as successful completion of a pre-placement physical.
