A Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.  They will be guided and follow the policies and standardized procedures, rules and regulations, requirement of supervision under CA statute, and bylaws of the UCSF Medical Center, some Nursing, Medical Staff, and any unique policies related to the provision of patient services. In California, nurse practitioners (APRNs) can practice, bill, and provide independent health care services under a standardized procedure in collaboration with a supervising physician.

Under the supervision of the UCSF Department of OBGYN & RS, in collaboration with the Medical Director, and guided by the policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and bylaws of the UCSF Medical Center, some Nursing Policies, and, Medical Staff Policies, and any unique ambulatory patient services this Nurse Practitioner II (NP II) position  provides direct care to routine gynecological patients, as well as obstetrics patients with multiple, often complicated chronic medical problems in the OBGYN and Perinatal Medicine Specialties practice.

This APP position may perform delegated functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice”.  In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedures (SPs) as identified by the list available on the Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) website. The NP’s primary responsibility will be to provide clinical care to all appropriate OBGYN patients in need of new, urgent, and same day visits. S/he will communicate regarding patient follow-up both on the phone and through My Chart. Assignments at this level may include the direction of continuity of direct patient care for all OBGYN patients; providing clinical care follow-up; assisting with clinical team InBasket and prescription refills. The NP will maintain same day access for urgent medical needs as well as routine care for OBGYN patients.  

The CIDP approved standardized procedures are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL privileges on the list.  This position may provide patient care in approved age groups and UCSF Health licensed settings.  The APP has responsibility for the quality of standards of care for OBGYN patient population and evidences self-direction and accountability in the development of this role within all UCSF medical center locations. 

UCSF Health requires all Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to be credentialed through its OMAG to practice and function in their clinical role.  This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, and Satellite Clinics, et al).  Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 30-60 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Required Qualifications
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at various UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Current CA RN license
  • Current CA Nurse Practitioner license
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
  • A minimum of one year of clinical experience as an NP
  • A minimum of six months of recent NP OB/GYN experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Compassion and interest in infectious disease

Preferred Qualifications
  • One-year prior experience in nurse practitioner role
  • Medical/surgical experience clinical experience

License/Certification
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.
  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement        
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice
UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation.
