Job Summary
Establishes objectives and work plans and delegates assignments to subordinate managers. Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. It is involved in developing, modifying, and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and may also have a campus-wide medical center or Office of the President effect. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel and severe delays in overall schedules.

Under the direction of the CTO, the Associate Director of Networking is responsible for providing network strategy and roadmaps, a reliable and predictable enterprise network, and a cloud network that supports the business needs of the UCSF Health and Benioff’s Children in Oakland and Affiliations (Marine General and Community Connect). 
This person must build a team of technology leaders and engineers that provide a secured, advanced, reliable, and secured network to the UCSF Medical Center, Affiliates, UCOP, and other UC Health systems to enable improvements to patient safety while reducing the cost of hospital operations. In addition, this team must provide technical consultative and collaborative services to the Schools, Research communities, Clinical Applications team, Hospital Operations leaders, and IT leaders.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field
  • At least 5-7 years of experience managing and leading teams
  • Deep understanding of monitoring systems and processes
  • Deep understanding of Agile/Scrum development and continuous integration
  • Experience with development, deployment, operations, monitoring, managing cloud-based platforms
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of hands-on experience with Network architecture, design, deployment, and operations
  • Requires full knowledge of Network Engineering and Administration of functional responsibility with knowledge of other areas of IT
  • Have strong skills associated with managing the internal information systems functions, data communications network, systems, storage, and cloud
  • Extensive or advanced knowledge of the subject area is sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and direction.  Experienced in developing detailed 5-year Network Technology roadmaps
  • Extensive experience managing highly technical staff
  • Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across the organization
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, including the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software
  • Ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products such as Cisco and Aruba, for use within a large and complex technical environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups with potentially varying levels of technical sophistication
  • Experience with modern technologies, architectures, and agile development methods, and are comfortable operating in complex, fast-moving environments, such as Network Infrastructure as Code, and automating workload using scrum principles
  • Experience operating complex multi-datacenter, multi-cluster environments and a strong understanding of multi-tenancy and security

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience with building/deploying pipelines
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • 15+ years of hands-on experience with Network architecture, design, deployment, and operations
  • CCDP – Cisco Certified Design Professional
  • CCDE– Cisco Certified Design Expert
  • CCNP tracks – Cisco Certified Network Professional
  • CCIE tracks – Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert
