Position Summary

The International Business Program is an interdisciplinary program combining business, foreign languages and cultural knowledge. Housed in the College of Arts and Letters, International Business is the college’s largest major and one of the largest majors at SDSU. It currently has about 460 majors and is the only nationally ranked undergraduate program in the CSU; the program currently ranks 11th in the nation. The staff consists of a Program Director, a Senior Advisor/Study Abroad Coordinator, an Internship Coordinator, an Academic Advisor, an Administrative Support Coordinator, and student assistants.

The academic advisor reports to the Director of the Program, but primarily works independently. The advisor works with students from the time they are admitted to the program (either pre-IB, or IB) until they graduate. The advisor provides materials to students, holds orientations for current and prospective students, and continually coordinates with other campus units such as Financial Aid, Admissions, Enrollment Services, the International Student Center, and individual faculty members. The advisor makes suggestions for changing procedures relating to the required study abroad and internship programs, and to academic advising. The advisor must use his or her familiarity with the rules for graduation and the IB program in order to offer advice and propose solutions for unique student circumstances. In addition, the advisor provides information to parents, community college counselors, and prospective students. The advisor keeps records of a sensitive nature and must therefore be able to maintain confidentiality. The advisor will also collaborate occasionally with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in CAL’s Student Success Center, attending meetings and consulting on policies and procedures as appropriate and agreed upon.
