THE POSITION

Reporting to the chancellor, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the deputy chancellor, the vice chancellor for student affairs (VCSA) has primary responsibility for the overall leadership, vision, strategic planning, and operational programming for the Division of Student Affairs. The vice chancellor oversees the development and completion of strategic and operational plans for the division, working to provide a dynamic co-curricular student experience that enhances students’ ability to be personally, socially, and intellectually prepared to make a difference during and beyond their college experience. The VCSA communicates effectively and works cooperatively with other divisions and the university’s senior leadership team to ensure the successful achievement of institutional and divisional goals as well as willing to take a student-centered perspective. The VCSA provides leadership for an integrated program of student engagement and support services that promote student engagement, sense of belonging, and student success as measured by retention and graduation rates, among other measures. The VCSA leads and supervises the units of the Division of Student Affairs including Dean of Students (includes Housing & Residence Life, Campus Student Activities, New Student Programs), Student Leadership and Community Engagement, U-ACCESS, Student Multicultural Affairs, Public Safety, Beacon Card, and University Health Services. In addition, the VCSA will direct and coordinate the development and maintenance of policies and procedures that promote the success, efficiency, and effectiveness of the Division of Student Affairs; intentionally collaborate with students to inform policy and practice; advocate for policies and services that benefit the student experience; and ensure policies and programs are in compliance with appropriate campus, university, state and federal guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree and ten years of progressively responsible experience managing all aspects of student affairs administration at comparable institutions. An advanced degree and specific experience managing residence halls, campus safety, health services, and other student services are preferred. UMass Boston is seeking a thoughtful, energetic, and highly collaborative administrator with demonstrated leadership ability in organizational and administrative matters, including but not limited to policy and program development and implementation, budget development and management, and personnel management within student affairs. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, and other applicable higher education laws and regulations, student development theory, and national best practices. The successful candidate will have strong organizational, managerial, interpersonal, and communication skills; high-level problem solving and analytical ability; experience working with diverse student populations; and demonstrated ability to use data and information systems to generate insights and design improvement initiatives.
