East Carolina University School of Medicine, now Brody School of Medicine (BSOM), was established in 1974 by the North Carolina legislature with a three-part Mission:

To increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the stateTo improve the health status of eastern North Carolina’s citizensTo enhance access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education

The Brody School of Medicine has 11 clinical and 8 basic science academic departments. The School enrolls 82 medical students, in addition to approximately two dozen basic sciences and public health doctoral students and 75 students seeking a master’s degree in Public Health. More than 400 faculty and nearly 1000 staff members are employed by the medical school.

In January 2022, Vidant Health, the region’s health care system, and East Carolina University/BSOM signed a joint operating agreement to form ECU Health, a new academic health care system dedicated to becoming the national role model for rural health care delivery. ECU Health includes 9 hospitals in partnership with outpatient medical services serving a population of 1.4 million across 29 counties. Located in Greenville, North Carolina, Vidant Medical Center is the academic hospital for ECU Health.

Job Duties :

The Department of Pediatrics plays a critical role in caring for the underserved in eastern North Carolina, providing leadership in primary care as well as a broad array of pediatric subspecialty care services to the region. The Department has a long history of leadership and innovation in medical education. The faculty in the department are diverse in background and talent.The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Brody School of Medicine, also serves as Chief of Staff to the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital, the only pediatric tertiary health care center in eastern North Carolina.The Chair directs and further develops the Department of Pediatrics, including regional clinical care, basic and clinical science research initiatives, and outreach activities. In addition, the Chair facilitates innovative educational programs.The Chair has financial authority over the department’s state appropriated budget, extramural research funding, practice plan revenues and expenses, and other department financial matters in accordance with applicable policies and practices.The Chair encourages faculty to seek extramural funding and provides leadership in departmental and school-wide functions.Duties, Responsibilities and Opportunities include, but are not limited to:Providing leadership and direction for the Department’s academic program and curricular design, for medical student education, clerkships, graduate medical education residencies and fellowships.Evaluating faculty members annually on teaching and clinical effectiveness and contributions toward Departmental service, educational, research and clinical programs.Leading efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and staff into the Department.Mentoring faculty and staff and provides appropriate support for professional growth.Serving as Chief of Pediatrics at Vidant Medical Center / James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital / ECU Health.Coordinating the Department’s involvement in and growth of patient care programs across ECU Health.Supporting the scientific investigative work by faculty and staff of the Department, to assure adherence to ethical and regulatory standards and dissemination of high-quality research.Monitoring the flow of intramural and extramural funds expended for research in the department.Leading budget planning for the department for all sources of funding.
Ensuring Department compliance with BSOM and ECU’s administrative policies and procedures and providing oversight for Department operations.
Sharing responsibility with all other Department chairs to maintain the stability and security of the medical school and its programs.

Minimum Education/Experience :

The BSOM seeks a leader who is cognizant of national trends in pediatric health, serving as a strong advocate for pediatric clinical services, medical education, research, and child advocacy.

The ideal candidate is a transparent and approachable leader demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, promoting diversity of background and talent, and participating in collaborative decision-making.

Administrative experience in an academic health care facility and a robust record of teaching and scholarship are required.

Qualified individuals must be a MD, DO, or MD/PhD, must qualify for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, be board certified in Pediatrics and be eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina.
