DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) Library invites applications for the full-time, tenure-track position of Senior Assistant Librarian. The successful candidate will have a vision for instruction and library service that is student-centered and evidence-driven. The candidate must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative instruction program. The candidate will demonstrate an understanding of successful pedagogy, as well as imagination and motivation to create innovative information literacy lesson plans while maintaining a commitment to the assessment of student learning. The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and commitment to library services for first-year and underserved students. The library is committed to going beyond goodwill and good intentions in order to improve the experience and academic success of underserved students.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime): Located on a scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs (GSMA), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future Merchant Marine, Coast Guard and Naval Reserve officers. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a tenure-track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. As tenure-track faculty, the candidate must meet the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) requirements for teaching, scholarship, and service to the campus and community. Other major duties and responsibilities include:
  • Teach one or more sections of credit-bearing courses offered through the Information Fluency program each semester
  • Teach course-integrated research skills and concepts and provide instructional support (e.g., lesson plans, research guides, tutorials, etc.) in the School of Letters & Sciences, including Culture & Communication, Science & Mathematics, and Global Studies departments and the current degree-granting programs of Oceanography and Global Studies and Maritime Affairs.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the School of Letters & Sciences to integrate information literacy into the curriculum
  • Create welcoming library initiatives that address students' sense of belonging at Cal Maritime, including first-year students, new transfer students, first generation college students, and students from underserved communities. These initiatives should be based on best practices, direct student engagement, and assessment results.
  • Serve as the department lead for the library's first-year programming, such as New Student Orientation and Common Read, and for campus initiatives for first-year students such as First-Year Experience.
  • Serve as the department lead to incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) best practices and principles into library services, collections, and other initiatives
  • Collaborate with existing programs on campus related to student success, such as the Student Success Center, Inclusion Center, Division of Cadet Leadership & Development, and student organizations to improve library services to underserved students.
  • Provide multidisciplinary reference service in-person and online
  • Share in collection development responsibilities for all Letters & Sciences programs
  • Create professional development opportunities for faculty related to research and related technology
  • Participate in information literacy assessment at the program and institution level
  • Maintain awareness of trends and developments in DEI, higher education, and technology,
  • Serve on department and campus-wide academic and administrative teams and committees
  • Other duties as assigned

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • An MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent
  • Demonstrated understanding of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards and Framework
  • Successful teaching experience
  • Successful experience providing public services for underserved communities
  • Deep and broad understanding of core concepts related to diversity and inclusion, with an awareness of current DEI issues in the library and information science profession and related fields
  • Successful experience collaborating on multi-department, cross-organizational initiatives
  • Experience with information resources used in academic libraries
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability and desire to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Evidence of initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness
  • Commitment to professional development, especially regarding pedagogy, DEI, and technology
  • A sense of humor, fun, and enthusiasm

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least three years of experience teaching information literacy at the post-secondary level
  • Successful experience collaborating with faculty in other departments on information literacy instruction
  • Experience with oceanography and political science information resources used in academic libraries
  • Understanding a variety of assessment techniques and trends in library instruction
  • Experience collaborating with tutoring, writing, disability services, and other student success centers
  • Interest in or knowledge of maritime history, industry, and subjects

  • SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual.
