The Division of Enrollment Management has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Associate Director, International Services to work in Coral Gables, FL.

The Associate Director is responsible for developing and implementing orientation, transition, and retention services and programs for international students, and for leading the Student Advising Team for Support Services and Programs. Via this position, the Associate Director facilitates the adjustment and retention of international students to the University and contributes to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. The Associate Director is also responsible for ensuring compliance with federal regulations and reporting requirements and advising international students on maintaining nonimmigrant visa status as well as a variety of other matters. This position reports to the Executive Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs and implements international student orientation programs for undergraduate and graduate incoming international students. Coordinate with Study Abroad, Law School, School of Business, and Athletics to plan individualized sessions for these specific student populations.

  • Creates and provides programs for international students in order to promote a welcoming environment and culture of belonging for and among international students.

  • Designs and implements a student peer mentorship program to assist all incoming new international students during their transition and adjustment to life in the U.S.

  • Coordinates and supervises special projects, develops and implements workshops and other education programs for international students that facilitate their transition to the University and retention.

  • Provides new, incoming undergraduate and graduate international students with comprehensive pre-arrival information.

  • Leads, mentors, and supports the Student Advising Team for Support Services and Programs.

  • Serves as advisor to the Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO). Oversees planning and implementation of COISO’s events including, including but not limited to International Week, United Nations Day, and International Dance Competition.

  • Represents ISSS in campus-wide initiatives and working groups including, including but not limited to the Standing Committee for Diversity Equity and Inclusions, Inter-Group Dialogue Working Group, Inter-Faith Working Group, and President’s Coalition on Sexual Violence Prevention and Education.

  • Processes immigration documents related to admission and enrollment.

  • Facilitates student retention by processing international student documents including work authorization approval related to internships and post-completion employment.

  • Provides international students with guidance on federal immigration regulations and assistance in resolving complex problems concerning immigration status and compliance.

  • Advises international students regarding cultural adjustment, taxes, health, social, financial, and other personal concerns and provides assistance to students coping with crises.

  • Responsible for complying with Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record keeping and reporting requirements.

  • Responsible for international student record keeping and reporting requirements, advising, and documents processing related to an international student’s status in the U.S.

  • Advises international students on academic progress, particularly low grades, reduced course load, and referral to remedial services.

  • Authorizes emergency loan and grants for international students to ensure continued enrollment in the University.

  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) for students in F-1 visa status and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for students in J-1 visa status.

  • Advises academic departments, and evaluates academic programs for international student enrollment eligibility in order to facilitate the admission of international undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Provides coordination and information regarding international student regulations and requirements to Undergraduate Admission, Study Abroad Office, Intensive English Program and other University departments.

  • Serves as a liaison between academic advisors, sponsors and international students regarding students' academic progress toward educational goals. Liaise with academic advisors to assist international students maintain their student visa status while in the U.S.

  • Reviews, analyzes and remains up-to-date with federal regulations and procedures affecting international students, implement necessary changes, communicate to University community and serve as an advocate.

  • Serves as an advocate to positively impact the international student experience.

  • Prepares statistical data and information on international students for multiple uses throughout the University and externally, including analysis and research including student programming assessment reports for SACS and the Institute for International Education’s publication Open Doors, which compiles and analyzes international student data throughout the U.S.

  • Contributes information and ideas for the development of a departmental strategic plan and operational initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with cross-cultural experiences in an academic and/or work environment.

  • Ability to work well in a team setting.

  • Knowledge of student services processes and procedures and customer service best practices are required.

  • Ability to think strategically and analytically and work collaboratively with others.

  • Customer service focused with the ability to build working relationships internally, at UM and externally with various stakeholders.

  • Extensive, in-depth knowledge of Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations related to international students and scholars (faculty and researchers) required.

  • Knowledge of immigration federal laws and regulations, as well as knowledge of SEVIS reporting requirements.

  • Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies and procedures.

  • Effective project management and time management skills. Ability to organize, prioritize and manage projects from inception to completion with strong attention to detail.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications including database management systems, reporting tools, and web-based applications.

  • Effectively utilize International Student and Scholar Management system, a web-based system that allows schools to electronically interface with SEVIS, as well as other systems used by International Student and Scholar Services.

  • Familiarity with ISSM, a web-based case management system that allows schools to electronically interface with SEVIS.

  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Education, International Relations, Counseling or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.

  • Five (5) years of work related experience. Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) advising F-1 international students on immigration matters preferred.
