Assistant Vice President, Academic Affairs

Class Description

Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs serves on the Provost’s Leadership Team to support activities relating to professional development, strategic enrollment, and student achievement and success at the Community College of Baltimore County. Among the primary areas of the Assistant Vice President, Academic Affairs is support for the initiatives of the Office of Instruction, the academic schools, and the student achievement and success efforts of the College. In addition, the Vice President, Academic Affairs collaborates closely with other members of the college’s leadership teams, including College Life, Student Development, and Enrollment Management Services.

Compensation within the posted range is determined by a candidate's education level and/or years of experience in the field.  Generally, employees are hired in the lower third of the scale.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years in a progressive academic affairs leadership role at an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as a dean or above.
  • Earned doctorate in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel Administration, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education required.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in academic affairs in a post-secondary setting.
  • Collegiate teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven success in establishing and managing multiple priorities that drive outcomes in a fast-paced, complex work environment.

Class Specific Essential Duties

  1. Supports and informs all functions of the Offices of Instruction in close collaboration with the Deans of Instruction, the Dean of Student Development, and the Dean of College Life, and the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs.
  2. Provides leadership in collaboration with the Student Achievement and Success Steering Committee and Joint Deans’ Council, and work with senior leadership to successfully plan, design, implement, and assess new processes, technologies, and student success strategies.
  3. Advances the purposeful integration of credit and continuing education programming along the academic continuum so all students can benefit from the breadth and depth of the totality of the academic portfolio.

Position Specific Essential Duties

  1. Contributes to and supports the strategic vision, planning, and leadership for the integrated delivery of the College's academic programs and policies including development, implementation, delivery and evaluation of enrollment and student success goals, objectives, and activities.
  2. Collaborates across the organization to enhance student achievement and success, enrollment, and academic support services, and to provide college-wide coordination and support to transformational academics.
  3. Assesses effectiveness of student achievement and success initiatives and activities,  Making appropriate adjustments to remain continuously proactive and responsive to innovative programming, effectiveness of teaching and learning, and the College's academic affairs.
  4. Analyzes the development and effectiveness of academic affairs policies and procedures and makes recommendations to the Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.
  5. Leads efforts to determine the causes of attrition and the factors that promote and increase student persistence and completion; Plans, develops, implements, and assesses programs that support educational outcomes which enrich the academic environment to produce highly-qualified, graduates ready to enter the workforce or transfer into upper-division coursework after attainment of credentials in their programs of study.
  6. Develops programs and initiatives to appropriately engage faculty, staff, students, and alumni in student achievement and success efforts.
  7. Identifies opportunities to incent positive student behaviors across all student populations.
  8. Collaborates with marketing department to create, implement, and evaluate marketing communications in support of enrollment initiatives.
  9. Collaborates with institutional advancement staff to continually scan and respond to the internal and external environment to advance the college's standing, effectiveness, and reputation as it relates to enrollment management and resource development/grants.
  10. Compiles a comprehensive academic affairs strategic action plan that is also seamlessly integrated with student affairs and student achievement and success priorities.
