Departmental Overview

Berkeley Summer Sessions, Study Abroad, University Extension, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (SSALLEX) is the trusted educational provider for students at all stages of their academic and professional journeys. As the extended educational division of the University of California, Berkeley, SSALLEX fulfills an essential part of the University's mission to extend access to this world-renowned university's research and scholarship to a global community.

A vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic organization, SSALLEX welcomes 60,000 visiting, current, and potential Berkeley students studying across a wide range of programs, including year-round courses, Fall Program for Freshmen, post-baccalaureate programs, visiting student experiences, study abroad programs, global internships, summer minors, professional certificates, and year-round offerings for older adults. On-campus and online offerings allow students from all across the globe to receive a Berkeley education.

SSALLEX works closely with faculty, academic units, international business partners, parents, and central campus service providers to extend the reach of the university's world-renowned network of instructors, experts, and professionals. We create rich learning experiences to develop skill sets and critical minds and motivate our students to be the change they want to see.

The UC Berkeley SSALLEX Information Technology team has developed a large portfolio of applications, services, and systems, ranging from departmental and administrative-supportive to enterprise and mission critical. Key among them are Slate, which is SSALLEX's Student Application platform, and the Student Information Systems Campus Solutions as well as Destiny One; Learning Management System, Canvas; Course Evaluation system, Explorance Blue; International student management system, Terra Dotta; Docusign; Service Cloud; and SQL Server Reporting Services.

This position will work amid a dynamic and distributed team of IT peers, including Developers and Business System Analysts responsible for understanding business needs relative to this extensive portfolio. Reporting to SSALLEX's CIO and working remote full time, the position will focus on projects and work of varying size, complexity, and urgency. The role will be key in identifying opportunities for efficiencies, fielding new business demands with innovation, and to conceive of and propose solutions that add value to the business.



Success in this role will require analyzing large-scale and complex business processes and problems, working with application programmers and stakeholders and developing solutions involving the use of computer systems, information flow and architecture; validating and documenting business and user requirements; designing details of automated systems and adapting system logic as necessary; planning and executing unit integration and acceptance testing, and lead cross-functional teams to solve complex business or systems issues.



Our unit supports and allows flexible but structured and well defined work days with hours that make the most of both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration and contributions; regularly scheduled and ad hoc virtual meetings as well as an active online presence through Slack, Asana, GSuite and other online tools contribute to a productive and agile team. Professional discipline, effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a fast paced, collaborative team environment will help a candidate thrive within this IT division.

Responsibilities
    Applies advanced business processes and systems concepts to define highly complex systems and program scope and programmatic and service objectives based on both user needs and a good understanding of applicable industry requirements and business systems, such as Slate, Campus Solutions, Destiny, and Terra Dotta among other commercial and custom-built enterprise applications. Initiates, designs or modifies procedures to solve complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, form of desired results, resources available and needed, divisional priorities, institutional relations management principles and protocols. Performs or oversees highly complex analysis of business and user needs, necessary in ensuring the high quality of services to students, institutional partners and divisional programmatic needs by documenting requirements, translating into proper system requirement specifications, or designing business processes and operational procedures. Plans, oversees or executes unit integration and acceptance testing for highly complex processes. Directs user support, training and change management as necessary. Leads cross-functional team of Student Services and Systems, including a team of business systems professionals, application programmer, student services assistants and advisors, and provides leadership, expertise, and guidance to solve complex business or systems issues. Organizes the interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget constraints. Works at the highest technical level of most phases of systems analysis while considering the business implications of the application of technology to the current and future business environment. Initiates, facilitates, and oversees the implementation and documentation of work process changes resulting from policy or system changes, working with major department managers and campus partners.

Required Qualifications
    Requires advanced knowledge of business analysis function. Must have knowledge relating to and/or ability to learn the design of applications programs across the campus. Strong Experience with and/or ability to learn Slate and Campus Solutions and one or more of the following: Destiny, Canvas, Explorance Blue, Terra Dotta, Docusign, Salesforce Service Cloud or ZenDesk, and SQL Server Reporting Services. Requires knowledge of other related areas of IT. Requires communication, organization, and project management skills. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn department processes and procedures. Requires advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Requires interpersonal and communications skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Has skills needed to develop conversion and system implementation plans. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Reliable judgement to provision solutions and contributions that are consistently intentional, impactful, and of the highest caliber.

Education
    Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Application development experience is preferred.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $86,000.00 - $127,300.00.
