Job Summary
The Africana Studies Program (AFRS) at Savannah State University (SSU) invites applications for a two- academic-year Visiting Assistant Professor position, beginning August 1, 2022. We seek a faculty whose research and teaching focus on African and African American life, history, and culture. As the oldest public Historically Black University in Georgia, SSU strives to cultivate the intellectual growth of our students beyond academics. The Africana Studies Program promotes this mission and seeks scholars who specialize from a range of perspectives. While a Ph.D. is preferred, a promising ABD (All But Dissertation) applicant or a distinguished candidate with experience in the field will be considered. We are developing academic tracks in Education and Social Justice; best candidates have credentials to teach courses that can be cross listed with other disciplines, such as Criminal Justice, History and/or Sociology.

Responsibilities
  • The faculty will teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester and work to connect our students with experiential opportunities to prepare them for engagement with marginalized communities and for future employment and graduate school
  • Service as a visiting faculty may count toward the award of tenure should the faculty apply and subsequently receive an appointment as a regular faculty member
  • May be required to perform job related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position

Required Qualifications
    M.A. in Africana Studies, African American Studies, or related fields including History, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, English, and Education. Applicants must have at least 18 graduate credit hours on the study of African and African American experiences or a distinguished record of experience in the field, which may include publications, presented papers, work experience priror to SSU, honor and awards, etc. ABD applicants should demonstrate evidence of the work in progress to achieve dissertation defense and degree completion within two years Prior teaching experience and demonstrated commitment to mentoring students Demonstrated experience in recruitment and retention

Preferred Qualifications
    Ph.D. in Africana Studies or African American Studies Prior teaching experience in an Africana Studies Program Demonstrated community and civic engagement Experience working with first-generation and non-traditional college students
