Position Summary
The Art Therapy Psychology Department at Dominican University of California invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track, 12-month position in Art Therapy at the rank of Associate Professor to start July 1, 2022. The ideal faculty member will also demonstrate experience leading an Art Therapy Department, as this position will begin with an administrative appointment as Department Chair, with appropriate course release. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent in Art Therapy with experience teaching, evidence of scholarship and/or publications.

We seek a creative academic and clinician with a rich record of teaching, publication, cultural humility, and leadership in Art Therapy to guide a department in its second year of transition to Dominican. The Art Therapy Department at Dominican operates the following graduate degrees: a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Art Therapy with both a standard and a post-MA advanced standing track, a Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) degree in Art Therapy, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Art Therapy. Dominican is proud to have acquired its first doctoral program at the University, and the candidate will play a large role in contributing to the strengthening of graduate culture on campus.

Chair Responsibilities:

Chairs are the chief academic officers of academic departments and are released from some teaching units each year as deemed appropriate by the Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs for carrying out the responsibilities of an administrative position. A Chair will be expected to:
  • Plan curricula
  • Administer and plan the budget in collaboration with the Deans Office
  • Meet with prospective students either physically, virtually, or by phone
  • Maintain accreditation and professional standards as applicable, including the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) licensure and American Art Therapy Association (AATA) credentials for the Masters level programs.
  • Representing the Department on Campus Visit Days and other appropriate occasions
  • Recruiting, hiring, and supervising part-time faculty in accordance with a part-time adjunct faculty unions collective bargaining agreement
  • Oversee evaluation of part-time adjunct faculty
  • Direct department orientation and mentorship of new faculty
  • Communicate policies and practices of the department to new faculty
  • Schedule and facilitate departmental meetings
  • Evaluate full-time faculty as stated in the Faculty Handbook
  • Supervise, support, and assess department faculty, both full- and part-time.
  • Provide discipline expertise to presentation of discipline-related exhibits or special public presentations
  • Coordinate, develop, assess, and revise discipline curriculum
  • Develop course schedules and assignment of faculty to courses for Masters level baselines of courses in Fall, Spring, and Summer terms
  • Participate in Catalog revisions in collaboration with the Registrars Office and Deans Office
  • Supervise Departmental policy on theses, practica, directed research, field placement, project-based learning, and other academic projects.
  • Manage departmental program review, including reviews of thesis, practicum, and ethics classes
  • Recommend approval or non-approval on independent studies
  • Mediate conflict issues between and among students and/or between student(s) and faculty related to departmental matters
  • Participate in or organize student recruitment efforts with Admissions and community organizations
  • Interview students, including review of art portfolios, transcripts, and clinical suitability
  • Review prospective students to the Advanced Standing track of the Master of Arts degree, personalizing a degree plan to translate past experience to ATR and ATR-BC credentialing
  • Update department flyers and brochures to reflect the discipline accurately
  • Recommend purchase of discipline-specific supplies
  • Review all department syllabi to ensure that AATA and BBS requirements are met
  • Attend annual meetings at the AATA conference
  • Liaise with the AATA board and ethics committee
  • Coordinate with campus administrative centers to achieve departmental goals, including the Business Services Office, Financial Aid Office, Registrars Office, Human Resources, Deans Office, Disability Services Office, Advancement, Information Technology Services, and other academic departments
  • Supervise and evaluate departmental support staff
  • Coordinate archives of theses and dissertation with the University Library

  • Faculty Responsibilities:

    Workload consists of 24 units each year, with 3 units of release time for research, administrative release, and teaching units. Along with their teaching duties and scholarship, Dominican faculty take an active role in contributing to the intellectual life on campus by participating in university wide committees, professional development activities, and advising students.
  • Prepare and plan courses during Fall, Spring and Summer terms
  • Demonstrate teaching effectiveness
  • Review student course evaluations each semester
  • Develop course syllabi and submit a copy of each to the Department and Deans Office
  • Attend class sessions and examinations
  • Post and hold at least three office hours weekly for every semester of full-time teaching
  • Be accessible to students and colleagues for physical, virtual, or phone appointments.
  • Advise students, including termly enrollment plans, degree progress, and capstone project planning into either practica or thesis outcomes with art-based research approaches
  • Mentor students to professional careers
  • Maintain a presence at the following conferences through distributing print materials, staffing a departmental table, meeting with prospective students, interviewing prospective students, presenting research materials, etc.:
  • American Art Therapy Association
  • Expressive Arts LA
  • Address student challenges when applying for Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) licensure and American Art Therapy Association (AATA) credentials
  • Serve on AATA or ATCB committees as appropriate
  • Coordinate with AATA to ensure that Dominican students are housed on AATA database and available at a national level
  • Facilitate and promote students to win AATA scholarships and other scholarships
  • Facilitate Departmental accreditation work by completing reports and annual updates for the following:
  • Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE)
  • AATA
  • BBS

  • Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Art Therapy, Counseling Psychology, Psychology, or equivalent terminal degree. The degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Background and/or experience commensurate with the position of Associate Professor and sufficient to teach graduate and doctoral Art Therapy courses
  • Registered Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credentials
  • Current clinical licensure
  • 5+ years of experience in academia, 5-10 years of experience in clinical work
  • Google Suite: Docs, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sheets, and Slides
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Digital Camera

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous leadership in Art Therapy
  • Peer-reviewed publications in the discipline of Art Therapy
  • Experience supervising and contributing to Art Therapy research, cultural humility, and community engagement
